Italian director Sofia Coppola is set to direct a new live-action The Little Mermaid movie.

Coppola has reportedly been in talks with Universal/Working Title to discuss details and reach an agreement on directing the upcoming project.

The Little Mermaid will be written by Caroline Thompson, who previously wrote movies such as Edward Scissorhands, Corpse Bride and The Nightmare Before Christmas, indicating that this version of Hans Christian Andersen's story might be much darker than Disney's animated version released in 1989.

Coppola's most recent release was the satirical black comedy The Bling Ring (2013), which received generally positive reviews from critics.

Harry Potter star Emma Watson, who played a part in The Bling Ring, is rumored to be a top candidate for the role of Ariel in The Little Mermaid.
