The science fiction series Doctor Who, which is celebrating 50 years on the air, has a vacancy to fill: the title character. On Sunday, the BBC announced who will play the role of the 12th Doctor.

Matt Smith, who placed the 11th iteration of The Doctor since 2009, will be leaving the program following this year's Christmas special. Smith announced his departure June 1, allowing for months of speculation as to who will play the role (A woman? A person of color? A Dalek?).

The answer: Peter Capaldi. The veteran actor was in the series The Hour and The Thick of It. He has previously appeared on Doctor Who in the 2008 episode "The Fires of Pompeii" and the spin-off Torchwood in the mini-series "Children of Earth."

Doctor Who, which airs on BBC America in the United States, will return for its eighth season in the modern era Saturday, November 23.
