Eurovision Song Contest 2013: Which countries advanced in the first semi-final?
May 14 2013 06:06 pm CET

The first semi-final for the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest was held Tuesday in Malmo, Sweden. 10 of the 16 competing countries advanced – who were they and where will they be in Saturday's final?

Here are the finalists in order of announcement from Tuesday's semi-final:

Moldova
Lithuania
Ireland
Estonia
Belarus
Denmark
Russia
Belgium
Ukraine
Netherlands

Lithuania may have been a spoiler for some, as the bookmakers did not have faith in the entry and the song ranked last in the press center's unofficial voting (it was my 10th place pick). Estonia may have been another squeaker for prognosticators, but during the live show Birgit delivered a solid performance of "Et Uus Saaks Alguse" from the 2-spot. "Love Kills" by Belgium's Roberto Bellarosa also may have caused some to lose their Eurovision pool, as the bookmakers ranked the song 15th while the press ranked it 10th (I ranked it 12th).

The biggest winner was the Netherlands and Anouk, who is the first Dutch act to advance to an ESC Final since 2004. The news was not so good for Serbia, as Moje 3 now holds the distinction of the worst finish for the country. 2009 was the only other time the country did not qualify for the final, finishing in 10th place in that year's semi-final.

The acts drew positioning for Saturday's final during the press conference following the semi-final. Rather than specific positions, the acts drew which half in which they will compete. The acts drew in order of performance (except Lithuania, who drew last), rather than through the order of advancement announcement. The producers will determine the running order once all the acts have drawn positioning. The Big 5 will draw positioning Wednesday following their press conference. The running order will be announced Friday. Sweden has already drawn position 16.
