Eurovision Song Contest 2013 Entry: Italy - Marco Mengoni - L'essenziale

Italy has yet another contender for a strong showing at the Eurovision Song Contest with "L'essenziale" by Marco Mengoni. Will Italy's success be mitigated if too many male vocalists advance from the semi-finals?
Title: "L'essenziale" ("The Essential")
Artist: Marco Mengoni
Last year's entry/position: "L'amore è Femmina (Out of Love)" - Nina Zilli (9th Place)
Ever since its return in 2011, Italy has been a power player in the Eurovision Song Contest. That trend continues with "L'essenziale" by Marco Mengoni, arguably the most pop-friendly ballad in this year's competition:
What I think works best in this entry is the natural quality of all the song elements. The instrumentation is purely acoustic while the vocals are even and non-gimmicky. The only other male entries in this Contest that share those qualities are Malta and Hungary (that is, the original version of the latter). However, neither of those entries are assured of a place in the Final, which means Italy will not have much in terms of direct competition.
As for the rest of the automatic qualifiers, this entry should allow for a solid stage performance and none of the other entries have as strong of a vocal presence. Germany was on top of the Big 5 last year with a male soloist delivering a ballad, so Italy may be on to something. It will be interesting to see how this song gets truncated to fit the three-minute time limit, but if Italy continues to focus on the essentials, another top 10 finish is not out of the question.
