Eurovision Song Contest 2013 Entry: San Marino - Valentina Monetta - Crisalide (Vola)

San Marino has executed a perfect strategy for setting itself up to advance to its first Eurovision Song Contest final with "Crisalide (Vola)" by returning singer Valentina Monetta. Will the tiny country make a huge impact in Malmo? I hope so.
Country: San Marino
Title: "Crisalide (Vola)"
Artist: Valentina Monetta
Semi-Final: Second, Position 2
Last year's entry/position: "The Social Network Song (Oh Oh Uh Oh Oh)" - Valentina Monetta (DNQ, 14th of 18 First SF)
Allow me to quote from my review of San Marino's entry last year: "San Marino ruffled some feathers, which I think was the goal. If the country builds off of the attention it has received this year and delivers a solid contender next year, there could be a promising future for the ESC newbie."
I believe San Marino has been playing the long-game this entire time, and I think it's BRILLIANT. Here's my theory: last year's entry was all about getting people to wake up and pay attention to the new kid. Though the song was objectively not good, Valentina was incredibly charming and sold the performance without becoming a joke act. Now that San Marino has people's attention and a singer who has made positive inroads, it's time for that singer to show off what she can really do and leverage all that good credit.
Though many may be disappointed San Marino received the 2-spot in the semi-final, I wouldn't worry. Latvia's entry is essentially a warmup act for the second semi-final lineup, meaning "Crisalide" is the true start to the show. The position also makes sense as the song's theme meshes nicely with the butterfly motif for this year's Contest. This song is also setting the proper tone for the second semi-final. There are so many unconventional entries this year: Finland and Romania immediately jump to mind. However, while "Crisalide" is unexpected, there is a pop-friendliness to the track and the style shift could almost be described as fashion-forward.
Fans are flocking to the song and even the bookkeepers are optimistic about San Marino's chances of advancing. Good job, Valentina! You have played the Eurovision game beautifully.
