Eurovision Song Contest 2013 Entry: Russia - Dina Garipova - What If

Russia is ready to bounce back from its runner-up finish in last year's Eurovision Song Contest with "What If" by Dina Garipova. Though the country should continue its perfect finals streak, is the song interesting enough to make an impression in Malmo?
Title: "What If"
Artist: Dina Garipova
Semi-Final: First, Position 6
Last year's entry/position: "Party for Everybody" - Buranovskiye Babushki (2nd Place)
Russia will likely join Ukraine and Greece in continuing its perfect streak of Eurovision Song Contest Final appearances with the song "What If" by Dina Garipova. However, I don't see this song having as strong a chance of winning the Contest. Take a listen:
If the performance in this video is any indication, Garipova will be a delight to watch on stage in Malmo. She has presence, a solid voice, and can light up even the simplest of staging arrangements. The problem with this entry is that the song is rather bland. There does not appear to be a significant hook in the song for the listener to latch on to, which any successful entry needs once the field of competitors expands to 26 countries.
Also, I have a very difficult time picturing this song as a radio single. I imagine "What If" is getting radio airplay in Russia and beyond, but would it have entered any DJ's playlist if the song wasn't in the ESC? If you look back at the last five winners of the Contest (all the way back to Russia's win in 2008), all of those songs could have survived more or less outside of the Eurovision ecosystem.
Should Russia advance to the Final – and I believe it will – they had better hope to draw positioning in the second half of the Final. However, even with that potential advantage, the producers are unlikely to make this the closing number, which is the boost this song needs if it wants a chance to win.
