Update: Veronica Mars movie reaches Kickstarter goal
Mar 13 2013 12:33 pm CET

The internet had a litter of kittens Wednesday morning after Entertainment Weekly reported a Veronica Mars movie may be in the works. However, it will require the help of fans and Kickstarter.

The news came to EW via an interview with Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas and star Kristen Bell. The goal of the campaign is to raise $2 million in 30 days so a low-budget movie could be filmed this summer. As an added incentive for fans/pledgers, there are rewards for every money level, such as a pledge of $10 receiving project updates and a copy of the script on release day or a pledge of $10,000 receiving a part in the final product.

According to the article, Warner Bros. – who owns Veronica Mars – is on board with the project, agreeing to handle distribution and advertising if the film gets made. This would include a limited theatrical release as well as digital distribution (Hulu, iTunes, etc.).

If this project comes to fruition, it could have very interesting ramifications for both fans and studios. Would fans be willing to pay twice (once to fund, once to view) to see their cult favorite programs on the big screen?

Update: At 8:55pm Eastern, the Kickstarter passed the $2 million mark. Rob Thomas took to Twitter to make the official announcement.
