Music veteran Bonnie Tyler will represent the United Kingdom at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden, the BBC confirmed.

Tyler, known for 'Total Eclipse of the Heart', will perform the song 'Believe in Me' which was written especially for this purpose.

"I am truly honoured and delighted to be able to represent my country at Eurovision," Tyler said after the announcement. "Especially with such a fabulous song. I promise to give this everything that I've got for the UK!"

BBC controller of entertainment and events Katie Taylor added: "Bonnie Tyler is truly a global superstar with a fantastic voice, and we are delighted she will be flying the flag for the UK in Malmö."

A source talking to UK newspaper The Mirror predicted a top-ten finish for the singer, saying that she "should be one of the strongest contestants in many years".

The 2013 edition of Europe's best known music competition will take place in the Swedish city on Malmö between May 14th and May 16th. The UK is one of six countries to be certain of a spot in the final.

The UK's performance at the Eurovision Song Contest hasn't been the best in recent years. Since the win by Katrina and the Waves in 1997, the nation reached the top five on three more occasions but finished near or at the bottom several more times. In 2012, Engelbert Humperdinck finished 25th with 'Love Will Set You Free'.
