The X Factor Season 2 Episode 12 Recap: Which Acts Are in the Top 16?

Oct 23 2012 10:31 pm ET
On a special edition of The X Factor, we find out which of Demi Lovato and Simon Cowell's acts will join the eight acts selected by Britney Spears and LA Reid. Who are the Teens, Young Adults, Over 25s and Groups heading to the live shows?
Previously on The X Factor: A baseball rain delay proved to be a humungous headache for Fox's programming department, as we were supposed to find out last week which 16 acts made it to the live shows. After airing the first hour of the program (starting at the convenient time of 8:40pm), we learned which of the four Teens Britney Spears selected, which of the four Over 25s are on Team LA Reid, and two of the acts Demi Lovato chose to represent the Young Adults. Here are those selections:
Britney Spears and the Teens
Beatrice Miller
Arin Ray
Carly Rose Sonenclar
Diamond White
LA Reid and the Over 25s
Vino Alan
Jason Brock
David Correy
Tate Stevens
Demi Lovato and the Young Adults
Jennel Garcia
Willie Jones
Anyway, the action picks up with the beginning of Demi's act selections. Um, spoiler for the first two, I guess. Here's how the other four verdicts went:
Nick Youngerman: Demi says Nick is "so much fun to watch on stage," but she is concerned that his talent may not meet the high bar that has been set this season. Nick will be going home.
Paige Thomas: This segment is all whimpers and tears as Paige does not play the fakeout game well at all. She's going to be tough to watch when she ends up in a Final Showdown, provided she makes it past the first live show in a couple weeks.
Jillian Jensen: Demi tells Jillian incredible vocals are only part of what the show is looking for. Unfortunately, Jillian will be going home. So far she's taken the bad news the hardest; though Jennel is backstage thinking the sobs are ones of joy. The two friends share a tearful goodbye, which Demi can hear and tugs at her heartstrings.
CeCe Frey: Demi says finding a balance between attitude and relatability may still be a challenge. Also, her Judges' House performance was a little over the top. CeCe makes it into Demi's final four.
Simon Cowell and the Groups
Lyric 145: Simon liked that they performed "Party in the USA" and had fun with the performance. Simon says he needs to pick groups that will blow people away, so of course he is sending this trio to the live shows. I'm really excited to see what they bring to the big stage.
Citizen Dope: This was the duo where we learned their entire story during a performance of "Superbass." Simon thought they gave it their all in the Judges' House performance, but that wasn't enough to invite them to the live shows. Sorry guys.
Emblem 3: The guys biffed their performance in front of Simon and Marc Anthony, but the skin quotient is going to be tough for SImon to reject. Also, the buttkissing the guys engage in as soon as they stand before their mentor. Simon says the trio is the first time he has gotten excited about a group, but their flub concerns him since they obviously didn't do their best. "I like to work with winners," Simon says, "I think you're winners." No surprise, but these guys need to bring their A-game with every performance – looks will only take you so far on this show.
Sister C: Simon says he could imagine identifying their voices without the aid of Shazam. Simon thinks America will love the sisters and sends them to the live shows. I disagree, but we'll see.
The final spot is between Boot Camp manufactured quintets Playback and LYLAS. The boys stand on a pier and emote while recapping their respective narratives. The girls sit on the side of a promenade as they recap their journey so far. Simon says he is impressed with the girls' vocals and the guys' chemistry (despite the fact that they do not look like a group). Simon has selected LYLAS for the live shows. YAY! They had the best Judges' House performance.
Next week: The X Factor live shows begin! 16 acts will compete next Thursday for the final pass from their respective mentors. Only 12 will advance to the viewer voting, so everything is on the line. We also will see Khloe Kardashian and Mario Lopez in action as hosts. It's starting to get real, y'all!
