The Amazing Race Season 21 Episode 4 Recap: Funky Monkey

Oct 23 2012 09:14 pm ET
The "Super-fans" managed to squeak by sheer luck last week, but it seems like taxi cab luck will be the biggest challenge this season. The teams headed over to Dhaka, Bangladesh where they would then look for a bus repair shop. Abbie & Ryan were excited to be first, considering they have the potential two million dollar pot. They seem like prime candidates for future Double U-Turns. Trey & Lexi were just excited to do well without a lot of travel experience. The first two couples arrived at a travel agency and grabbed tickets for Singapore at 10AM, meaning everyone would be on the same flight.
Departures
Abbie & Ryan - 9:52 PM
Trey & Lexi - 9:54 PM
We fast forward with everyone on the same exact flight, Gary & Will managed to balance out. They assume that Rob & Kelley U-turned them, but Rob was ready to lie his way out of the situation.
The teams arrived at Dhaka with the couples and twins seemingly in front, but Rob & Kelly realized that there was a taxi rental service where they jauntily walked to the booth and picked up a taxi. At least it's not as stressful as the chaos outside. All the other teams decided to walk and find whatever they could as the chaos came through. Abbie & Ryan found the area to be crazy, but the twins seemed to love the third world craziness. The Chippendales agreed, taking in the sites as they go. The Beekman boys wondered if their goats speak the same language of the local goats; I'm not sure if that was a silly joke or a weird science experiment for cross-breeding goats. Trey & Lexi got a taxi that needed to refill their gas as Gary & Will's driver decided to take a "short cut" to their destination. Rob & Kelley got lost and arrived at the Hospital landfill. How "landfill" and "bus repair" sound similar is beyond me.
Abbie & Ryan and the twins arrived pretty quickly to the bus depot and were the first to experience the roadblock. The clue warned the teams about filling gaps. Obviously it's not a dental Roadblock. Phil explained that the racers would have to fill in dents on a side of the bus with putty and sand a second section. I assume the two sections were different because of drying and the fact that they had to color their plaster. They also had to remove three pairs of seats and send it to the refurbishing area. There was also a Fast Forward, but neither team took the task.
The Chippendales saw the Fast Forward, but assumed that a team in front already made the attempt as one of the James’s took the task. Rob & Kelley skipped the Fast Forward in hopes that Rob's Monster Truck repair skills would kick in. I don't think it harmed them, but they didn't really gain an extreme amount of time on the task. Long Hair (Don't Care) the Fast Forward and took it. The task was to become dead rat collectors, collecting dead rats.
Beekman Josh took the Roadblock, with Trey and Gary bringing up the rear. Long Hair (Don't Care) grabbed gloves and headed to their first destination, a restaurant. Ryan was the first to finish the putty, but he destroyed his clue from sweat and putty. The couple got help from the Chippendales as they showed him the second part of their clue. They started claiming that alliances were helpful, but I think common sense of having the non-Roadblock participant holding the clue would be smarter, because they knew they didn't have to run too far in this task.
Long Hair (Don't Care) couldn't figure out where their first destination even was as one James looked like he had a lumpy mess on a wall. I didn't think stucco was the concept the repairmen were going for. Rob and the Twinnie did better than the James, James had to start over scraping his mistakes and almost punching a hole in his square. James was reassured by Abbie, which made it sound like a relationship would blossom from this in the future. Or they had an alliance that "reassurance" could be shared between the two groups.
One of the Beekmen and Gary were having trouble as they both seemed like they had to start over; Trey soon following the restart club. Long Hair (Don't Care) picked up their rats from the first client and joked about knowing a few rats in the music business. Transitioning from rats to snakes, Nadiya screamed "Long, strong, and hard!" as motivation to her sister and then the double entendre continued as she screamed "Keep going, don’t stop!"
Ryan was first to finish sanding as he grabbed the first set of chairs. He set the first set of chairs down as Rob finished and grabbed his chairs; he decided to go for two at a time giving them a few seconds of catch up with the divorcees. The next destination was the Kawran Bazaar Shootkir Market where they would have to dig through dried fish for a fish painted in the red/yellow race colors to get their next clue. It looked kind of orange-ish, but I get where they were going. Rob & Kelley soon completed the detour giving a big hug to their judge. Twinnie started running and didn't have trouble with the chairs at all.
Josh managed to sand as James caught up. Trey was stressed out as Gary was stressed out. Long Hair (Don't Care) got their second set of rats with no big issue until one rocker landed in sewerage and may have hurt his ankle. I don't think it was serious, it was just gross. Josh got to the seat removal a lot sooner as James grabbed his chairs. Trey managed to finish before Gary, but the two were sanding around the same time.
Beekman and the Chippendales left next, as the Divorcees, Monster Truckers, and Twins headed to find their next clue. It was the Detour and their choices were Pound the Metal (Make a local tool with fire and hammers) or Pound the cotton (make a cotton mattress). The divorcees chose cotton because Abbie knew how to sew. They started whacking at the cotton as the truckers wandered around lost. The twins found their clue and decided to pound metal. The truckers followed and pounded metal as well. I was surprised how well Abbie understood how to roll a blanket really quickly as she started sewing while Ryan danced for her. The twins tried to hammer as they missed their first few hits. Kelley did a much better job as she at least hit the metal.
The rockers had their last set of rats with crowds following them mostly because they saw the cameras and decided to mug for the show. Long Hair (Don't Care) delivered their collection of rats and headed over to Shambazar Chan Mia Ghat, the Pitstop. Gary & Will were last to finish the bus task as Trey & Lexi finished a few minutes before them. Bad taxi luck really did in a decent team; though they knew that luck of the draw is part of the game. Gary & Will hoped for yet another comeback as Trey & Lexi had a dead taxi. Seriously, Taxi luck is becoming the story of the season. Their driver picked the best pre-commercial solution: Sprite.
After the commercial, the driver attempted a push-start and the motor started up. Long Hair (Don't Care) arrived in first and got a trip to Antigua, not before bathing their sewer foot in hand sanitizer. The divorcees finished their mattress, but left too much stuffing out of their bed. The twins continued to cheer themselves on as they finished their task with Rob & Kelley following quickly behind them.
The teams were told to get a riverboat to Shambazar unlike the Rockers who could supersede all those things. I have to assume that any boat on a river connotes a "riverboat" for the judges because a lot of taxi-boats were used.
The Chippendales coughed into their fish as the Beekman Boys caught up, found their fish, showed the Chippendales, and headed out to the mattress task. Seriously, are all the teams convinced The Chippendales are dumb bimbos? They are all so willing to help the alpha-males. The Chippendales also decided to pound the cotton. The Divorcees fixed their mistake and headed out in fourth, Ryan hugging the clue giver a little too much. The all-male teams were a little too chaotic with their cotton as the fluff flew everywhere. The twins grabbed their "Babu" taxi driver as they headed to the boat launch.
Trey & Lexi caught up and overtook Gary & Will in a taxi ride. Maybe Sprite does help? They also got their fish before Gary & Will started. Both teams split up and Trey & Lexi picked metal while Gary & Will picked mattress.
The divorcees got to the boat as the twins boarded the same boat. The Monster Truckers looked for a taxi to the riverboat. The Chippendales suffered from poor sewing as Josh claimed to have some weak sewing skills from being a former Drag Queen. The Beekman Boys finished while the Chippendales missed fluff from their chaotic whacking.
Trey & Lexi were pounding metal as Gary & Will saw the Chippendales still at the task. There was that outside shot that they could overtake the Chippendales, but it really seemed unlikely, considering that the Chippendales only had to add a few bits of fluff and then sew the small section. The Divorcees and the Twins knew that there was going to be a footrace for the mat. Both made a run for Phil screaming and running. Little did they know they were second and third.
Monster Truckers arrived at the Launch area with Beekman confused, staring at another boat. Beekman took a smaller boat, similar to the Truckers. Gary smacked Will in the face with a fist holding a needle as the Chippendales left the detour.
Rob & Kelley arrived to Phil, but they didn't arrive at the right destination and were forced to go back. Rob screamed at their boat-taxi driver as he didn't bring them to the right place. Beekman correctly arrived at Swarighat and bumped into Trey & Lexi. In another nice note, the Beekman Boys told them to take their boat back to the original point and just take the same boat back to Swarighat, because they were at the finish and not at the start. Gary & Will finished sewing and headed to the pitstop. Rob & Kelley headed to the correct area and started running. Trey & Lexi got to the right destination and headed on the right way. Rob & Kelley arrived in 5th, excited to still be in the race. I guess Rob screaming at their taxi driver that he cost them a million bucks was moot. The closest it could have been was "You cost us a trip to Antigua!"
Trey & Lexi arrived in the correct area as in a moment of Deja Vu Gary & Will arrived at Swarighat via taxi. The Texans told them that they were on the wrong side, just like Beekman told Trey & Lexi. I guess it's both pay it forward and a cushion for knowing they weren't last. Gary & Will were last, but because they barely squeaked by each leg, I didn't expect much from them anyway. Both were hit pretty hard for not being non-eliminated.
