Simon Cowell announced on his Twitter account shortly before Fox issued a press release that The X Factor will be back for a third season.
"I wanted you guys to be the first to know that FOX have confirmed that @TheXFactorUSA will be back next year for it's [sic] third season," Cowell tweeted Monday afternoon. Although still not the mega-hit Cowell and Fox had hoped for, The X Factor has averaged a 3.9 rating so far during its sophomore season.
Included in the press release for the announcement, Fox revealed its schedule for the next two weeks, including the first live shows of the season:
•Tuesday, October 23 will feature a special one-hour episode revealing the full list of the Top 16 acts. The Top 16 were to be revealed on last Wednesday's episode, but a rain delayed baseball game caused a series of headaches and preemptions. The episode airs 9:30pm Eastern.
•The first live performance show will take place Thursday, November 1. All 16 acts will perform on a special two-and-a-half hour episode beginning at 8pm Eastern. We also get to see newly-named hosts Khloe Kardashian Odom and Mario Lopez for the first time.
•The first live elimination will be a two-hour extravaganza on Sunday, November 4 at 8pm. The press release did not specify if the home audience will get the opportunity to vote or if the mentors will decide whom to eliminate. Presumably only 12 acts (three from each category) will continue to the next week of competition.
"The live shows for this season are days away," Cowell tweeted, "I have a feeling, as we say in the UK, we are in for a complete ding dong!"
