Project Runway Season 10 Episode 14 Recap: Finale, Part 2

Oct 19 2012 12:08 pm ET

Tim arrived and hugged the contestants since all four got to make it to the finale. Melissa and the rest of the designers were relieved. He suggested not to think too hard, but to shuffle their cards they were given. The designers went to Yotel and had a little bit of time to decompress. Christopher was upset that his clothes were a bit questionable. The four toasted glasses, using only three, and woke up the next morning in fear.

The designers returned to 1407 and Fabio needed room for improvement; he had the word "lux" in mind to help. Dmitry was worried about having matronly clothes, he needed to go younger. For Christopher, there were tons of critiques including the fact that his clothes looked boring. Melissa was critiqued for being limited and she needed more of a wow factor. Melissa needed a colored dress to give her design oomph.

Tim arrived and explained that the four are on an even playing field. The designers had two days. The designers had $300 and time to go to Mood to enhance their clothes. At Mood, Fabio was looking for expensive looking fabrics. Dmitry wanted to make some new tops and grabbed black silk. Christopher decided to grab whatever he wanted. Melissa grabbed a "blood orange" leather fabric.

The designers returned and Melissa started to joke around a lot. The designers all had time to smack talk each other while they were in interviews. Each designer had their hair consultations, Melissa's looked great with the twist. Dmitry got some weird silver leafing. Christopher was left confused.

In the last two days, the designers had to struggle with fittings and construction. Dmitry was worried about tailoring all his clothes on new models. Melissa was worried about the collars of last week's jacket and Nina's hate for the collars. Fabio was responding to the changes and adding more refinement to his collection. Dmitry was criticized for making clothes really sexy. He wanted to also make his models look even younger. Christopher was worried about mixing and matching pieces and only had time to fit pieces on models. Melissa had a great white dress, but her model's shoes were making her worry about walking. The designers thanked their models as they left and he was left confused with what to do. Time immediately ran out.

There was one day before the runway show and Fabio knew the end was near. Fabio knew that he was a bit artsy when he started and could be a prominent designer. Tim welcomed the designers and explained that they would have consultations and only until 5PM. Dmitry wanted strong brows and a cold face. Christopher wanted lightness and had a bit of a cat eye. Fabio had a pastel/metallic. Melissa decided to go with a "fresher" face.

Tim arrived to check on the designers. Melissa had a great "blood orange" (aka red) dress she was working on. For Dmitry, Tim worried about his styling. He said he was going to add silver-leaf to the model's hair. Tim headed over to Christopher and he basically had a billion looks and needed Tim's suggestions. Tim wanted him to be set on what he needs to do. Fabio had positive feedback from Tim because Fabio finally got to the right areas. Tim left and thanked the designers before leaving.

Christopher was extra snappy with one day to go. Melissa decided to make the most complicated dress with three hours to go. Both Fabio and Dmitry sat around as the two calmly sat down. Tim popped up and gave the designers a 15 minute warning. Christopher exclaimed that he didn't have anything done and Tim was shocked. Both Melissa and Christopher were stressed and had to stop as they had a champagne toast, even though Christopher needed to sew instead of drink. Melissa had to fit; Christopher had to still make one final dress.

It was 2AM and Fabio didn't sleep; Dmitry had basically an hour of sleep, joking how the four looked like vampires. They walked to Lincoln Center and the nerves hit as they walked to the runway. Fabio started to worry about fitting. Dmitry had no hair and makeup done. Melissa was shocked as her "blood orange" dress fit perfectly. Unfortunately for her, the white dress seemed odd. Dmitry got all the models, but had to change all of them at the same time. As panic hit, Heidi, Michael Koors, Nina Garcia, and guest judge Jennifer Hudson walked out. Christopher's bottom tier of his finale dress got caught and he had to cut the bottom of the dress.

Heidi had her welcome speech as she welcomed Michael, Nina, and Jennifer Hudson. Debra Messing was also there, but as a fan and not a finale judge.

Christopher - Deconstruction/Reconstruction

Look 1 - Nipples open the show. The whole outfit screamed hooker to me because the slit of the skirt was too high and the high beams were shining.
Look 2 - The jacket top was cool, but the bottom had no flair whatsoever.
Look 3 - I didn't like that the top was so sheer that you could see the bra. When is that a new trend? Even Dmitry loved that idea. The jacket was really cool but that was the only thing interesting.
Look 4 - The look was similar to one of the three he used during last week's show; the shorts seemed tailored well but it seemed very middle of the road.
Look 5 - The trench-style coat looked really cool, it covered up the print skirt, but I thought the whole look was sleek and stylish and loved the blue.
Look 6 - I disliked the concept of leather on leather for the top and vest, it was too much for that piece and it made the pants look very distracting. I also didn't like the brown tone of the pants.
Look 7 - This look was the one that really showcased how cool the print was. The pants were well made, but it was the top that was the emphasis point, the neckline was great.
Look 8 - As much as I liked this look, I had no clue where the pants had to do with the rest of this collection. It was the only look with that color and it kind of reminded me of Heidi Klum's Babies R' Us line when Melissa made pants like them. It was a shame because I really appreciated the way the jacket was tailored.
Look 9 - The way the X-ray's line breaks the black from the side of the dress, making the print look really sleek. You wouldn't know it's an x-ray, it's just pretty.
Look 10 - The finale dress was great, it seems like Christopher's signature layering and feathering effect he loves and it had great drama. Personally, I would have considered a different necklace, but I'm sure that was probably one of his last thoughts considering the skirt.

Melissa - Exploration

Look 1 - I still question the length of the collar because it starts looking like a chef's coat. The combination of the short skirt and the leggings made a lot of sense.
Look 2 - There was something clean about the dress that the vest to me distracts from. I liked the pop of color from the clutch and there's an ease to the dress. It's as if someone like Anya made a dress but without a print.
Look 3 - The dress had an interesting top but the transition into the different fabric didn't work as well as the future looks with that same design.
Look 4 - I'm not sure how useful a leather bathing suit would be but there was something almost superhero-chic to the outfit. The "I don't care" glasses combined with the shawl was interesting.
Look 5 - There was something that screamed junior when it came to the combination of the clothes, possibly because the model also looked really young.
Look 6 - The dress looked pretty standard, nothing original about the black dress itself.
Look 7 - I liked the sleeve of the white dress, but I found that one side was almost too heavy for the dress.
Look 8 - I liked the jacket with it's crackles and the shorts, but the top didn't work. It was the proportion of stomach showing that threw me off.
Look 9 - The front of the dress was sleek and beautiful, her walking on the runway was awkward. I loved at the end that the back had such a cool black string.
Look 10 - The pow of color was great with this dress, the way Melissa works with the collar was her signature and it was strong in that color.

Dmitry - Organic architecture

Look 1 - First of all, let me point out how much I hate the eyebrows. They look like and old European women. The silver hair thing also didn't do anything to help. The first dress was beautiful because the skin tones under the cutout sections matched the makeup so well. There's a lack of styling from the accessory point of view.
Look 2 - I liked the business suit aspect of the outfit, but the skirt and top were generic.
Look 3 - I don't get the appeal of the feathery shoulders or the visible bra. The metal neck piece was gorgeous and I just wished it was attached to something else that was less questionable. The pants had a nice fit to them and I liked the front fabric line.
Look 4 - The use of fringe on the dress made a lot of sense. The geometric fabric was beautifully used and I don't mind the stomach cutout at all. It has just enough peek where it's not showing too much midriff. I wished the back-sipper had better transition.
Look 5 - I've had my reservations about the fringe on the sleeves, because it worked so much on the prior dress. The top was too non-existent to comment about. I also didn't like the harem-pant.
Look 6 - After having so many geometric wow-pieces, this outfit looked like a last minute throw-together. There was no transition between the two dresses.
Look 7 - This dress reminded me a lot of Ven's folding flowers, but with a refinement and maturity. I liked how the full sleeve was part of the dress.
Look 8 - Again, I don't get the strong shoulders. The cutout for the neckline was creative and would have looked better without the metal things on the sides.
Look 9 - The dress was beautiful and draped well, but felt like it didn't belong with the rest of the collection. I get that Dmitry can drape, and drape well, but it was almost too prom.
Look 10 - The finale dress was interesting but the straps that connected the sweetheart top didn't make sense. It was cute then pinched for no reason to me. From the sweetheart top down, it's actually an amazing dress. The way the model flipped the skirt at the end was marvelous.

Fabio - Cosmic Tribalism

Look 1 - I loved the blue tones on the models dark shiny skin. Changing the color of the shoes worked perfectly for the collection.
Look 2 - The blues continued and had a great ethereal quality to it. The flow of the bottom part of the model's top was beautiful.
Look 3 - While I like the proportion of the skirt to the proportion of the jacket, I really disliked the way the jacket buttoned.
Look 4 - I'm surprised how well I respond to Fabio's collection, because off of the models it didn't make any sense to me. There was a great flow to the dress and yet somehow the dress was accessible.
Look 5 - The dress came off almost plain from comparison to the other dresses, but when you keep looking at it, you appreciate the curves on the bottom and the good neckline.
Look 6 - I found the look to be a bit too baggy, which is odd considering his dresses had flow. It could possibly have been because the model had her hands in her pockets.
Look 7 - This dress looked less baggy because it never cinched at the waist like the other one attempted. It was still a bit too simple for the rest of the dress.
Look 8 - The layering with the pink was great; something that has so many layers and still makes the model look skinny is always a challenge especially considering how airy all his clothes are.
Look 9 - I really like the side-shoulder effect because it was clearly different from Melissa’s. The width of the shoulder made the dress.
Look 10 - I didn't think the final dress had enough power to close the show, but it was equally as cohesive. The neck piece made her model look like a giraffe.

Heidi welcomed the contestants back to the runway and thanked the four. She was proud about how complex all the collections turned out.

Dmitry's critiques began first and Heidi loved how beautiful the show has. Heidi loved the fringe jacket and matching dress. Michael found the collection to be expensive, but the final dress started hitting costume. Nina found most of his looks to be highly editorial. Jennifer loved the quality.

For Melissa explained the absurd and surreal. Michael loved how there was a way a girl wanted look. Michael was confused as the model couldn't walk down the runway. Jennifer suggested that the dress could have had more fit in the waist instead of by the ankles. Heidi loved the "tough chick" persona. Nina loved the hair and makeup. The judges loved the finale pow. Melissa was congratulated for how she can do sexy instead of slutty.

Christopher explained his x-rays and prints. Michael loved the boom in the first dress. The splattered leather worked and Michael loved the print. The romantic gown didn't fit the collection; Michael didn't think a traditional gown needed to be there. Heidi loved the collection. Nina loved how light the fabrics looked.

Fabio explained the tribal aspect, but wanted to make something poetic. Heidi loved the collection because of how fresh the collection was. Nina loved how he listened to the clothes. There's an ease to how he dresses. Michael loved the yin/yang to his designs. Jennifer loved the colors and layers.

The designers each had their Miss America responses about deserving the win, becoming a real designer, quality, point of view, and pushing themselves. The final four sat in the back totally nervous as the judges had a long chat. Christopher was critiqued for going all over the place, he still hasn't found himself. Melissa had a great point of view and good taste, but there was no surprise at all. The judge's loved Fabio's element of surprise. They loved how he put the clothes together. His biggest criticism was consistency. Dmitry was polished and modern; he has a signature. It was obvious that the final two were Dmitry and Fabio. Jennifer thought that Fabio needed the push for the win.

Heidi brought the four back and started cutting soon. Christopher was in fourth place; he still needed to find his voice. Melissa from the editing was obviously third. The final two were Fabio and Dmitry, both having positive feedback. I'm not shocked or disappointed to say that Dmitry was the winner of the season. Fabio was disappointed more for his mother being so disappointed. Dmitry was beyond happy for what he's done. Dmitry's best friends popped up to celebrate; I’m not sure exactly why all were generically blond. Tim was actually in tears. Kat, Dmitry's model also won the modeling spread.
