The Amazing Race Season 21 Episode 3 Recap: There's No Crying in Baseball

Oct 14 2012 11:56 pm ET
After we lost decent competitors like Amy last week, I realized that Amy wasn't prepared anyway. Amy didn't have her running feet, like Sarah a few seasons back. We returned to Indonesia, with leg two finished and a new one beginning. The racers were headed over to Antika Jaya Rumah Makan with the threat of the U-Turn ahead. Interestingly, the way it was worded didn't mention if it was a double U-Turn or a blind. Or both. The twins immediately got confused as they grabbed Texas and "The stupid Chippendales" to help them get directions. If they are stupid, I assume the Twins are hoping they could out-race them by using the Express Pass in a worst case scenario. Eventually after the "competitive" Abbie & Ryan arrived, all teams realized that they needed to get taxis and eventually left the twins in last screaming "zoom-zoom" like this was a Mazda commercial. Josh & Brent pointed out that they were doing their best, but realized that the first four teams were "ultra-competitive." I don't think they are ultra-competitive, I think that their weaknesses are masked by stronger traits (decent communication skills, physical strength, and pure luck).
Departure Times

Trey & Lexi - 6:12
Jaymes & James - 6:16
Abbie & Ryan - 6:19
Josh & Brent - 6:26
James & Abba - 6:34
Caitlin & Brittany - 7:08
Rob & Kelley - 7:22
Gary & Will - 7:32
The teams arrived at their Roadblock which clued them that one had to "serve a balanced meal." The way it was worded immediately pointed out that this wasn't an eating challenge. All the contestants had to do was serving 20 plates at the same exact time. They had to pile all 20 plates and if anything drops, they have to try again. I feel sorry for the business that would have to flip the bill. In a cute fashion, the sweepers actually had more of a squeegee than a broom to sweep all the broken plate and food. Also nice? How white the floors were before the Americans trampled through it. Lexi was first and still had her book bag on as she did the Roadblock. Was she thinking that it would be a good counterbalance to plates in her front? The twins got a bad taxi driver and immediately fell behind the Beekman boys.
Teams had trouble balancing as Lexi immediately lost plates and Indonesians started laughing hysterically and clapping at the American's dismay. Jaymes was a server who knows how to carry a tray and from his experience it allowed him to finish first, though he was quickly followed by Ryan. The teams were then headed to the Train Station as Long Hair (Don't Care) arrived and left in fifth. The twins finally got there in sixth; something really disappointing for the girls considering the luck of the taxi.
The first four teams realized that they could get train tickets that left at 7:36AM. Interestingly, Gary & Will left four minutes prior to the first train almost sealing their fate as part of the back pack. The back of the teams were pretty calm in the plate Roadblock, the twin succeeding after some deep breathing. Eventually Gary finished last.
At 7:25 James & Abba made it to the train but the train left before Twins could make it. The rest of the teams celebrated as they knew, barring from an insane taxi drive or a penalty, they were all going to move on to the next leg. While on the train a guest claimed that the next train was a 10:55 departure, though she seemed bashful at knowing the information. Back at Surabaya, the twins realized that she was on the 10:50 with the "stragglers." Either way, the twins could overtake any of the teams with muscle and loud screaming.
The front teams on train one decided to shake hands on not U-Turning each other. Long Hair (Don't Care) was sitting in the back, but it didn't seem like their style to U-Turn any of the front teams anyway. They were already in a comfortable position and going with the flow.
The other teams eventually showed up to the train station to wait for the second train. The blondes spoke slower for no reason to a local and found out that the other teams left three hours ago. Gary & Will were last to arrive, but made the 10:50-ish train; Will finding extra money on the ground. Maybe it was a sign of good luck to come.
The snack salespeople popped up holding the clue, which the front teams aggressively snatched from him without any remorse. The clue told them of their two Detours which were Lion's Head (Join a procession in a giant lion costume) or Egg Head (Pick up eggs at the market and have their heads lit on fire via coconut to cook eggs). Most of the front teams picked the lion challenge.
The front teams arrived at Bangil and immediately the size of the Chippendales hindered their transportation. Beekman struggled with finding the market, but didn't seem too nervous about being the back of the front train. Their three hour cushion was still in play. The Chippendales and the Two-millionaires got changed and realized they had to hold part of the mask with their mouth. The procession didn't seem that bad but even though there was pain, the teams powered through the task. Interestingly, someone pointed out that they would be penalized if they dropped the lion's head, but it never happened on this episode.
Josh & Brent found the market by the time Abbie & Ryan finished and headed to Perliman Pos. 1 with Chippendales, Texas, and Long Hair quickly following. Beekman sat and their heads were on fire. It was okay since the two had headscarves on their heads as well. Also, there's the really easy joke about the two being literal flamers.
The front teams tried to reinforce not getting U-Turned before Abbie & Ryan arrived first; they decided not to U-Turn as the Chippendales, Texas, and Long Hair also didn't U-Turn. At the school Abbie & Ryan arrived in first with a trip to Fiji with Texas right behind them; Texas warned that future U-turns may not be so friendly.
Beekman had to eat hot sauce covered eggs but had no problem and headed off. They were unknowingly in a great position since no one U-Turned them and the other teams were still on the train. When they arrived, they didn't U-Turn and went on their way.
On the second train, not only was the clue receiving nicer, the twins even were willing to pay. Again, most of the teams picked Lions Head realizing that they could easily power through a physical task. There was chaos as most teams left the station with Gary & Will again behind the pack. The two couldn't see the transportation as they pointed out that they weren't dumb in real life. The twins got changed as the Blondes struggled with making change. They started turning into the Angry American when their driver didn't tell them how much their ride was. The twins loved their task and compared it to being, "Crossfit with a lion's head" and ended in the front of the back teams. Gary & Will got changed and started walking the path as the twins finished the lion's task and left quickly.
If the episode were to end here, the whole thing would have been nice and clean, but there was still a U-Turn ahead. The Twins arrived at the U-Turn and one twin decided to walk into a cameraman as they decided not to U-Turn. Monster Truckers decided to U-Turn Gary & Will just in case they got lost. The twins tried their best to even find the U-Turn.
Gary & Will found their U-Turn as they decided to make an attempt to U-Turn someone behind them. They knew that the Blondes and Monster Truck were somewhere near them so they decided to take a chance and U-Turn Rob & Kelley. *Bzzt* Wrong! Rob & Kelley were already celebrating their leg finish with Phil. According to editing the Blondes were doing laps around Bangil because they arrived at the Egg detour. In amazing editing, the blondes wandered around as they both thought the U-Turn was somewhere there. Gary & Will's camera people catching the two wandering around in the background. Gary & Will finished their task, ate the eggs and knew exactly where to go. The blondes reached the U-Turn and left, but then boxed around the block again for no reason as their taxi luck plummeted.
Gary & Will kept going, determined that they could still make it. Suddenly the Blondes popped up behind them and overtook them. The teams hit a split in the road as Gary & Will went right and the Blondes went left. Fortunately for Gary & Will they chose the correct direction and lived to race another mistake-filled day.
