The Amazing Race Season 21 Episode 2 Recap: Long Hair, Don't Care

Oct 09 2012 02:05 am ET
People were too nice last as Abbie & Ryan capitalized on first place and The Chippendales were in tenth because of Lexi & Trey. We could have lost a strong alpha male team (and potentially good eye candy) for a guy who seemed to command his wife to do his bidding. Actually, I'm okay with that elimination then. We return to Shanghai and the Bund Observatory, where we last saw the intense footraces to the pitstop. The racers learned that they would be flying to Indonesia and heading to the Alun Alun Stadium. Also written in the clue was that the prize for this leg would be the Express Pass. It's actually good to see that the Express Pass survived because if another team outside of Abby & Ryan won it, it would help them prevent a two million dollar win. Amy was upset with herself being naive on the first leg. She knew that her prosthetic legs were motivation. The blondes almost got slammed by a turning car while our Sri Lankan twins botched city names. We also learned the love story of Rob & Kelley. It didn't matter to the producers to even tell us when the other five teams left, only we could assume that it was before 10AM.
Abby & Ryan - 5:35 AM
Amy & Daniel - 5:36
Caitlin & Brittany - 5:41
Natalie & Nadiya - 6:05
Rob & Kelley - 6:08
The first five teams got to the airport and Rob & Kelly decided to go to Hong Kong in a connecting flight. The other teams decided to take the same flight to the 10AM Indonesian fight that connected via Jakarta. Eventually, the teams six through ten teams arrived and took the same 10AM flight. Rob & Kelly realized that it's either smart or really dumb to not follow in people's steps. The two James' were excited to have the same flight. Rob & Kelly were first to leave, but the rest were still ahead. The rockers made a smart attempt to do a standby for an earlier flight as all the other racers were stuck behind them. The rockers got an hour advantage as they flew ahead. Over in Hong Kong, the monster truckers were worried but excited about their plans; unbeknownst to them that they were actually behind by a few hours.
The rockers arrived first and all the other teams followed with a lot of people rushing into taxis in the chaotic darkness of the airport arrivals terminal. The Twins were screaming as much as possible, they were joined by their friends, the Texans. The Rockers managed to take the first number, but had to wait until 8AM, rendering their hour advantage moot. The rest of the teams arrived and eventually took numbers. The Twins & Texans aligned a bit as the blondes complained about being sweaty. They were all excited to realize that Rob & Kelley were last to arrive. They talked to Texas and Twins, though neither seemed that concerned.
The contestants woke up and entered the stadium. The contestants would have to race with bulls via motorcycles. One of the contestants claimed that losing didn't matter and they would get the clue in the order they arrived. It seemed like the Bulls were much faster anyway with a professional motorcyclist driving. The rockers were the first to head to the Genteng Kali Bridge.
It was nice to see all the racers doing something that really didn't affect standing, but instead learn about a very original sport that seemed exhilarating. The contestants were all given their next clue to find their Roadblock. It asked the contestants "Who likes to Party?" This actually meant that the contestants would have to give four kids a manual version of a ride you'd get in front of a supermarket and make four balloon dogs and four balloon hats. It was the weirdest roadblock that didn't really make much sense to me. Either way, the children seemed happy enough to get a free ride and some balloons. Amy, even with prosthetic legs was fine with cycling; good for her. It didn't seem like the kids were excited about the James' unnecessary aggression. The real challenge was the balloons popping on a dime.
Eventually Rob & Kelly were the last off of the bull/motorcycle challenge still trailing as a while ton of kids were now sitting on a silly animal waiting and hoping that these Americans would just finish their task already. I have a feeling some of the moms placed their kids on the rides in hopes that they could use this to make their children celebrities. Or at least local ones with that one production photo via CBS. By the time the Blondes were riding, Amy and Lexi were done. The teams arrived and left pretty quickly in their arrival with the exception of Will and Rob. Caitlin was at least making headway and inching slowly with her third balloon.
While the contestants were looking for Wijaya Motor Shop, it looked like Texas and the Twins found the Detour first. Very good taxi luck, I suppose. The luck of the taxi draw will come up soon. Their Detour choices were Ice by the Pound (deliver ice to a truck and then cart the ice to a stall) or Fish by the Barrel (Sort and stock fish at the market). Texas and Twins split up as Texas headed for ice and Twins sorted fish. I don't mind the twins, but their volume levels could get squeal-y and intense. At least we know that they are racing with passion, but damn: stop sounding so shrill.
There were only the stragglers at the roadblock as the blondes and monster truck left in eighth and ninth. Will started to fall apart in the roadblock; he was sweating profusely, breathing heavy, and unfocused. Gary tried to calm him down and he eventually made his first dog.
Amy & Daniel were lost and confused as the Monster Truckers didn't know where the motor store was either. Bad taxi luck struck both teams. Texas seemed fast enough though the twins were sweating profusely as they started to study their fish. The Rockers were sent to Wijaya Tires, instead of the motor dealership which allowed the James’s and Abbie & Ryan to pull ahead of them. Will was finally finished and they headed to "Ouija" Motors. Amy & Daniel were then sent to Wijaya Bothers. Close Mr. Driver, but no cigar.
The Beekman Boys started loading ice when the Chippendales and Abby/Ryan were nearing filling their trucks. It was a battle for first as Texas and Twins tried to finish different detours at the same time. It was actually very close, but the meticulous twins got the clue first to check into the Pasar Pabean Market. Texas got the clue and followed quickly, but even with editing you knew that the twins were first. The twins were excited and hugged Phil, making him smell like fish and excitedly took the Express Pass. They were excited to see Trey & Lexi as well.
Will & Gary were still driving around as other teams checked in. Taxi roulette was failing them, the Monster Truckers, and Amy & Daniel. Amy asked a woman to call information and she responded with "There's no information in Indonesia." I'm pretty sure there's still Google and a decent enough hotel. Gary & Will were still driving around as Amy & Daniel got into another taxi still with no good luck in the task.
Rockers & Blondes were done and checked in by the time that Gary & Will and The Monster Truckers found this motor dealership. The Monster truckers picked ice so Gary & Will, in a smart move picked ice to keep their eye on their competition. They would at least know if they could beat the truckers in a footrace if it came down to it. The Monster Truckers left with Will & Gary a few yards behind. They were convinced they were last, even though Amy & Daniel were actually last and taxi drivers were killing them.
The truckers and "David & Goliath" (Gary & Will) struggled with ice as they dropped all the ice on the ground. I wish there was a rule that the ice had to be whole. Rob & Kelly were so excited to see Phil and knew that there was at least one team behind them. Realizing they were eighth must have been an unexpected thrill. Gary & Will were disappointed as they slowly walked through the market place convinced that they would be last. What happened to racing till the bitter end? That unfortunately meant that that Amy & Daniel were last even though I would have loved to see Amy continue racing on this show. Imagine how much it would have sucked if they were first last leg and then last now? The whole two million dollar storyline would have been crushed in two episodes.
