Project Runway Season 10 Episode 12 Recap: In a Place Far, Far Away

Oct 09 2012 12:17 am ET

The final five were worried that elimination would hit them so close to the finish line. Melissa was convinced she had to battle Fabio and Dmitry for the third spot. The contestants headed over to Parsons where Heidi congratulated the top five and the final challenge. She sent the designers to a "far away place" to meet Tim.

The contestants were sent to a castle with a garden. Tim welcomed the contestants to Oheka Castle. Next to him was Billy B. frequent judge on Ru-Paul's Drag Race and apparent L'Oreal consultant. They wanted the castle to be inspiration along with limited edition make-up that had four different color palates. Tim told them that they had one muse and had to make an avant garde look. They had to be new and experimental. Tim pulled names out of a bag.

Fabio - The Enchanted Queen
Sonjia - The Seductive Temptress
Dmitry - The Wise Mystic
Melissa - The Artsy Muse
Christopher - The Enchanted Queen

The contestants had 45 minutes of drawing time, $400, and two days to make magic. The contestants spread out and started drawing. Dmitry decided to work on a suit based off of the castle. Sonjia wanted something complex but form fitting. Christopher thought of an evil villain. Melissa focused on corals and blue. Fabio wanted a strong queen with a weak interior.

At Mood the designers started to run and grab fabrics; Fabio was excited to grab lots of fabric. Christopher was convinced that he'll do better than Fabio. Sonjia grabbed golds and greens, but had no goals. Melissa wanted to work with the enchanted queen, but ended up having to deal with the colors she had.

Tim arrived with the designers and explained they had until 10:30, but Tim emphasized how ambitious the designers had to be. Sonjia started to worry as the gold fabric she wanted wasn't in her Mood bag. She had five yards and it was gone. She had to make magic with what she had left. The designers actually had time to sit down and had dinner. I wished we saw their breaks more because it helped with characterization.

It was consultation time with Tim and started with Melissa. She wanted a high collar with a nice mix of colors. With the time running out, Tim was worried. For Christopher, the shape was avant garde. Dmitry had an interesting sleeve, but Tim was more concerned that the sleeve lacked drama. Fabio's Enchanted Queen had boy shorts and the jacket left Tim quiet and confused. He honestly called it costume because it looked dreary and flat. For Sonjia, she was stuck. Tim reminded her that she won three challenges, but she hasn't been working to her potential.

There was a lot of quiet work before time ran out. Dmitry was worried as he changed his look with time running out. 10:30 hit quickly as Fabio decided to re-work his jacket on day two.

It was Day Two and all of the contestants were drained. Christopher knew a month's worth of work had to be squeezed into two days. The designers knew the looks had to be amazing. The designers got to work quickly on the designs. Sonjia continued to play with her designs as she created an interesting collar. Fabio had an idea of wearing his button shirt upside down, so he flipped his jacket. Dmitry was happy about his jacket; Christopher knew his tailoring was amazing.

Each contestant had makeup consultations as each were probably upset that they had to waste time for L'Oreal to get a commercial into our show.

Tim popped again for his second consultations. Tim was crazy about Fabio's jacket, he loved the vibe. For Melissa, she was concerned about timing. Tim knew that she was going to be short on time. Sonjia wanted a floating illusion and while Tim saw the avant garde, he worried it would look like a student project. Tim looked at Christopher's dress and it lacked any energy. Christopher was left confused because the garment had so much. Tim didn't see any avant garde. Dmitry's jacket was stunning, but still lacked the avant garde element. Tim thought it was a ready-to-wear jacket.

The designers continued to work around the clock when their models arrived for their fittings. Dmitry was worried that his looks weren't avant garde enough. Fabio was excited because his designs fit perfectly on his model. Sonjia was excited that the fit worked perfectly on her model. Christopher was worried that it verged on costume. Melissa started cursing up a storm as the color scheme worried her.

Morning arrived quickly, thanks to editing, and the designers got their coffee and worried about the last runway. When they arrived at Parsons, all the last minute alterations had to happen. Tim reminded them that they had extra hair and makeup time. I'm assuming that meant they had extra sewing time. Fabio needed to worry about his hand finishing. Of course we got a lot of shameless hair and makeup tips and product choices. With 15 minutes to go, Melissa was hand-stitching her clothes.

Heidi welcomed the five remaining contestants wearing a really odd dress. Heidi could pull off a lot of different designs, but the pink and black didn't work for me at all. Along with Michael Koors and Nina Garcia was guest judge Zoe Saldana.

Melissa - The skirt with the red peeking out looked more like a ballroom dress. On Dancing with the Stars, it would just be a cheetah print with red on the inside. The sleeve/collars looked like a warrior princess. I did think the vest was really cool. Melissa explained that she wanted a modern day muse. Michael loved the color combinations and the concept of separates to be thrilling. Michael thought the skirt was flattering. Nina understood the vest, but thought the skirt may have been too long. Heidi was the only one that disliked the dress.

Fabio - I wanted to see the jacket more but she took it off. My initial thoughts about it were negative, and then I realized it was the scene stealer because the dress itself looked like it was a nightgown. I hated the shorts as well. Michael loved the jacket, but the bottom of the dress looked matronly. Heidi didn't respond to the dress; there was sadness. Nina loved the jacket. Fabio flipped the jacket and the judges liked it. Zoe hated there was no shape.

Dmitry - I can't argue about the structure or the tailoring of the dress. Even the color choice was great. I just didn't see avant garde, even with the strong collar. The zipper in the back was ugly. Dmitry tried to explain to the judges about the castle. Heidi loved the angles and the peekaboo of the skirt. Zoe found the sleeves to be stunning. Michael liked the tailoring, but the shoulders screamed costume. They all hated the collar.

Sonjia - I understood the bottom of the dress, but the top looked really odd to me. Was the whole dress made out of a tablecloth? The waves in it made it look a little too wooded instead of leafy. I also didn't get the back at all. The judges thought the colors were nice, but Heidi was worried that the mesh didn't match the dress. Nina thought green was more like envy. Michael didn't think it looked complete; the back looked like a mistake.

Christopher - The dress may have been too literal for me where the feathers and sparkles made the dress too costume. For the judges, Michael thought that the makeup and nails were strong, but he started to get into the costume territory. The judges thought that there should have been more construction in the bust. Nina thought there were too many ideas.

Heidi went for the Miss America section where everyone begged their way into their collection. Melissa tried to merge her old and new self. Fabio now learned how loud he wanted to speak. Dmitry explained that this was his dream as a child. Christopher realized that it was his dream. Sonjia got teary as she explained that her mother was her motivator and she deserved it.

The contestants picked who they wanted with them in the finals.

Melissa - Sonjia & Fabio
Fabio - Melissa & Christopher
Dmitry - Fabio & Christopher
Christopher - Fabio & Dmitry
Sonjia - Melissa & Dmitry

In: Christopher, Dmitry (Challenge Winner), Melissa, Fabio
Out: Sonjia

Next Week: There are no guarantees about the final three as everyone struggled.
