The X Factor Season 2 Episode 6 Recap: The Final Auditions - San Francisco and Greensboro

Sep 27 2012 09:54 pm ET
It's the final night of auditions on The X Factor! Simon Cowell and Britney Spears are not 100% sold on every audition. LA Reid found a heavenly voice. Demi Lovato thought some of the boys auditioning were cute. Here's what happened in Greensboro and San Francisco.
Previously on The X Factor: 13-year-old Trevor Moran died before his audition. Not "died" died, but died the way Russell on Survivor died. Probably from the same cause: excessive dehydration. Trevor recovers and eventually makes his way on stage. Simon Cowell warns him "you get one chance at this, so you gotta nail it." So Trevor does "I'm Sexy and I Know It" by LMFAO. Now Trevor is dead again…to me! The performance is exactly what you would see a 13-year-old YouTube aficionado do. Of course, the crowd gets into it, so all the judges have no choice but to support the kid. Simon gives the kid all of the yeses. It's going to be a long hour.
We jet back to Greensboro and meet Owen Stuart. Owen is a 16-year-old who recently moved to Charlotte from Buffalo, New York. His girlfriend Tori is still in Buffalo and they aren't handling the separation well. Tori is all Owen can talk about in his on-stage interview and he dedicates his performance to his girlfriend. Simon rolls his eyes. Owen does "Airplanes" by B.o.B. and it's a little rocky. The singing part is half-a-step off, but he does the spoken/rap part well. LA Reid and Demi Lovato like what they see instantly, but Britney Spears and Simon look like they need some convincing. The song ends and all the girls in the audience are "SQUEEEEEEEEEE!" LA was impressed that Owen could pull off both singing and rapping. Britney says it was a good performance but she wasn't wowed. Demi says all the girls in the crowd were wowed and wished they were Tori. This is really unhealthy. Simon says he really likes Owen's commitment and focus. Britney votes no, but the other judges send Owen to Boot Camp.
Freddie Combs is a 40-year-old minister from Tennessee. I believe he is the first contestant to be featured on the show while in a wheelchair. Freddie used to be 920 pounds, but thanks to several years of work and his supportive wife, he is down to 540. Wow. Freddie sings "Wind Beneath My Wings" and dedicates it to his wife. I don't know if it is the arrangement or Freddie's minister background, but the song sounds like a performance from one of those televangelist shows you sometimes catch while channel surfing. That's not a criticism; just an observation. Freddie was on-key, and his narrative potential is of Chris Rene proportions. LA calls Freddie's voice "heavenly," while Demi describes it as beautiful and touching with emotion. Simon says he had a vision of Freddie standing as he sang the song. Spoiler for December's finale, I suppose. All four judges give Freddie yes votes.
16-year-old Lauren Jauregui wraps up the action in Greensboro. She sings "If I Ain't Got You" by Alicia Keys. Her voice matches the huskiness of Keys, but Lauren is another performer who doesn't really know what to do with her arms. Yes, it can be taught, but it's still weird to look at. All four judges loved the audition, so Lauren will be heading to Boot Camp.
The final audition takes place in San Francisco. Jordyn Foley is a 12-year-old who is way too into pink and sparkles. She's precious to an irritating degree. Simon jokes that she is probably going to sing "Tomorrow" from Annie. Jordyn starts to blush, because that's exactly what she's going to sing, despite Simon saying he's allergic to the song. As am I. The performance is exactly what you would get from a 12-year-old who is way too into the drama club. Demi and Britney think Jordyn is totes adorbs while LA calls her a bundle of joy. Simon says he likes Jordyn, but votes no. GOOD. The other judges vote yes. Then Jordyn's entourage of 50 or so people (not an exaggeration) flood the stage and thank the judges. Boot Camp is going to be harsh for Jordyn.
Speaking of Boot Camp, it starts next week! Woo! This time the show will be in Miami to test the skills of all the acts that advanced from the auditions. Who will cave and who will make it to Judges Houses? I. Can't. Wait.
