Project Runway Season 10 Episode 9 Recap: It's All About Me

Sep 15 2012 10:31 am ET

It's morning as Christopher realized that he was already halfway through. The contestants knew that it was mentally challenging. Elena and Dmitry continued to complain about each other. Before the challenge was given Gunnar dropped a weird bomb: he wants to buy his mom a boob job. Really? Yeah, he should probably not win.

The contestants met with Heidi as she explained that the next challenge was about individual inspirations. In the workroom Tim and Mondo (Project Runway: All-Stars winner) explained that this week's challenge was the HP textile challenge. The inspiration was "cultural heritage." Mondo explained that the challenge was his turning point and explained that it was his time to dig deep. Tim explained that the textile had to be "prominent" and the contestants had a dossier

As the designers created their patterns, designers loved ones started showing up. While most had their mothers with them, Fabio had his boyfriend, Dmitry's BFF with video of his father, and Ven had his sister. Gunnar hugged his mother and I realized that she didn't need a boob-job. The episode actually was a smart move as each contestant got humanized. From Gunnar's family photos to Elena's happy moments in Ukraine, viewers immediately could give them support.

Dmitry thought of Belarus as Melissa tried to make something Polish. Ven wanted to have a hibiscus to channel his religion. Melissa thought of trying to make "bloodlines." Gunnar decided to channel his teen bullying with a bird breaking free. The loved ones had to leave as Tim brought everyone to Mood. The contestants had $100 for supplemental.

The contestants were drafting their designs as Gunnar wanted to make an equestrian-inspired outfit. Christopher realized that his family had the concept of the ladybug. Sonjia wanted to have wow pants, which I'm pretty sure was what Mondo did. Dmitry needed to do separates to show his versatility. Christopher had no idea how to use his designs because he didn't have his print. Sonjia was worried about the fit of the pants.

Tim arrived and announced that their loved ones were having dinner together at Atlas. Elena was getting a love and support. Everyone wanted to enjoy the moment as Christopher was thrown off by having his parents around.

The designers returned to Parsons as the designers received their fabric. All the contestants were excited about what they got. Fabio apparently designed abstract penises and vaginas. What? Christopher continued to work his fabric as he got confused by the heft of the pattern. Ven liked the subtle nature of his pattern. Gunnar explained to Sonjia about how he was bullied and it moved Christopher.

Gunnar was struggling with matching his pattern and stressed out. Christopher worried about his direction as Sonjia suggests he walk away from the design for a little bit. Tim arrived and Christopher explained that he loved one design and elements of the other. Tim reassured him of the cocktail dress. Tim wanted to make sure Sonjia's fit had to be perfect. For Dmitry, he extracted the shape, but Tim worried about the lack of sexuality. Tim looked at Ven's design and thought it looked like a menstrual cycle. He hoped that no one was offended by it.

Tim analyzed Fabio's design and loved the organza to tone down the print. Tim loved the blood/vein idea and thought she needed to be more ambitious. Elena knew that her design looked like a nursing scrub. For Gunnar, his riding jacket started looking like a suit of armor where something's too heavy. With time running out, Ven was worried about his design and created something new. The models arrived for their fittings and while Sonjia was happy, Ven decided to create another fan effect dress.

The next day arrived quickly as Tim gave the contestants the same two hours of prep time. The designers tried their best to have a strong fit as Christopher realized his design lacked spirit. As time ran out, Tim announced that the loved ones would be watching the runway show with them. The loved ones arrived for final critiques and a little bit of helping.

Heidi welcomed the designers and along with Michael Koors and Nina Garcia were Mondo Guerra and Anya Ayoung-Chee (who along with winning Season 9 won Season 9's HP Challenge).

Sonjia - The top was a smart choice to emphasize the pants. It was tailored and moved well. It was far from pajamas. I didn't even realize that the front of the top had great seam lines.

Elena - After she said "scrubs" that's all I could see. I loved the zipper, but even the front pockets were like a nursing scrub. I didn't like the yellow/blue/pink combination of the pattern.

Christopher - The design was too covered by the organza, it seems like there were puckering issues and the zipper was wobbly.

Ven - The dress was boring. The skirt was the same as we've always seen and I could have drawn the flower.

Fabio - I liked the toned down look of Fabio, which is odd because Christopher's didn't look as good. The pants had a nice flow to it.

Melissa - It wasn't a bad dress, the shoulder was creative and I didn't see any pattern breaks from the seams.

Gunnar - The jacket makes sense and didn't look as heavy as when he began with the panels, but that didn't make it any better. The boot made the look even younger.

Dmitry - While I couldn't see the pattern, I thought the shapes on the jacket were a nice touch.

Heidi called Elena and Fabio, they were both safe. The rest had the highest and lowest scores.

Melissa explained that her Polish family combined with blood. Heidi wished there was a bit cooler; Nina thought it had a wide-appeal. Ven explained his Indian heritage, but Heidi thought she looked like a Hawaiian Airlines attendant. The rose with the hibiscus clashed. Nina thought he didn't put the print together. Dmitry wanted to put his shapes from Belarus; Michael thought that was executed well. Nina warned him about the styling.

Gunnar explained the bullying, but Heidi didn't get the design at all. Michael thought it looked like postage stamps. Nina thought it had a struggle. Sonjia was a bit literal with her design, but the fit of her pants were strong. Christopher explained his ladybug pattern, but Heidi thought it was okay. Mondo thought he could have accepted the print.

As a bonus Heidi called Tim about Ven designs and he explained that he never saw the flower dress during his critiques, instead he saw maxi pads.

The high scores were Melissa, Dmitry, and Sonjia. The winner this week was Dmitry. The low scores were from Ven, Gunnar, and Christopher. While the bottom two were Gunnar and Ven, and while Heidi wanted to send both home, the person eliminated was Gunnar. Ven tried to explain that he'll take the critiques to heart.

Next Week: It's the Rockettes challenge!
