Project Runway Season 10 Episode 8 Recap: Starving Artist

Sep 07 2012 09:28 am ET
After everyone "met the bar" of the last challenge, no one was eliminated. It gave both Gunnar and Alicia a bit of a kick in the butt as they woke up. Gunnar lightly giggled as he survived. Both Christopher and Ven just wanted someone eliminated.
Heidi welcomed the contestants to the runway for their new challenge. She emphasized that they needed negotiation skills this week. In the work room Tim walked in to a table of arts and crafts. He explained that there was no budget, because the contestants would be fundraising. They would be selling items off the street. T-shirts were one option. Elena’s eyes continued to roll out of her head. Tim offered that they could do alterations or consultations for money as well. Of course it was another team challenge with no team leaders. This was also the last challenge where Christopher got to bask in immunity.
Team 1 (dubbed Team Mean Girls) - Christopher, Sonjia, and Gunnar
Team 2 (dubbed Team Rocky & Bullwinkle) - Dmitry, Elena, and Alicia
Team 3 (dubbed Team Competent) - Ven, Melissa, and Fabio
The teams had three hours to create whatever they could. Christopher/Sonjia/Gunnar tried a stencil technique. Elena created some of the ugliest clothes as her eyes bulged out of her head. She stormed off as Alicia dreaded her selling with Elena.
Time ran out as the contestants had two hours to make as much money as possible. The teams initially were met with a lot of rejection. After a commercial break, Team Ven got a donation. The teams selling skills started to pick up as they sold a decent amount. The next day, Tim got the totals for the teams:
Ven / Melissa / Fabio - $800.48
Christopher / Sonjia Gunnar - $684
Elena / Dmitry / Alicia - $500
Tim explained that the teams would have to create two looks for fall; one of the two looks had to include outerwear. The contestants had 30 minutes to sketch and headed to Mood for another 30 minutes to shop. Elena emphasized shades of grey and just getting the colors together. Sonjia was stressing out as they stared at their fabric. The three decided to split up and get whatever they could.
The teams returned to the workroom as cutting and draping began. Elena was strongly against Dmitry's designs. Christopher compared the two to Boris & Natasha from Rocky & Bullwinkle. Alicia was nervous as she put her head down and continued to work.
Tim arrived for his consultation and he went to Team Rocky & Bullwinkle first for consultation. Dmitry tried to emphasize it's clean design. Tim looked at the jacket and he was concerned about the sleeves. He warned Alicia about the crotch fit. Dmitry had exposed darts in his dress which confused Tim. Tim was at a loss for words.
Over at Team Competent, Ven tried to explain the ease of the design as he continued to make a fanned/petal dress. Tim was worried that different women would wear the pieces and there was no cohesive thought. Tim thought Ven's skirt didn't belong with the rest of the design.
Tim headed to the Mean Girls as they wanted to try a harder look. Sonjia wanted a short jacket with leather sleeves to counterbalance Christopher's trench. Tim warned Sonjia that having two tones of the jacket may be overdesigned. Christopher also wanted leather sleeves on his trench. Elena called it a snuggie.
After consultations, Team Competent wanted to ditch Ven's skirt. Natasha and Boris started going crazy as Elena couldn't stop laughing. The models arrived for fittings as the Mean Girls realized that the jackets weren't as good as Gunnar's dresses. With time running out, Ven compromised and had a different skirt. Alicia's pants had some tailoring issues and Elena brought it up. Alicia shot her down.
It was the day of the runway show as Melissa realized how limp Fabio's collar was. Elena didn't even think that the shoulders were right. Tim explained that there was the same two hours as always. The models arrived as the Melissa's pants needed the perfect scrunch. Sonjia's jacket was better than we last saw it. With time running out Dmitry continued to work on his ugly scarf as Alicia and Elena fought for attention.
Heidi welcomed the contestants and reminded everyone of the challenge stipulations. Christopher was still immune, but there were no immunities left. Along with Michael Koors and Nina Garcia was guest judge Anna Sui.
Team Rocky & Bullwinkle
Look 1 - I thought the shawl looked like a throw blanket, but the dress was above average.
Look 2 - Elena's collar was falling apart as her hem was weak. I was indifferent about the pants.
Team Mean Girls
Look 1 - The jacket didn't look as Legend of Zelda as the team worried. I loved the color combination and the two toned skirt was strong.
Look 2 - The two colors were better than I expected, but Gunnar's dress was much stronger.
Team Competent
Look 1 - The skirt had movement, but the collar of the jacket was really weak. The hemline of the shirt was scrunched. I also hated the socks.
Look Two - The coat looked like an art smock with buttons, the pants and shirt were a bit of a throwaway, considering the two shirts looked exactly the same.
Heidi announced that Team Mean Girls were the winners. The other two teams were automatically in the bottom.
Team Mean Girls - Michael thought that the girls looked sophisticated. After looking at the dresses, Heidi loved the jacket. Nina loved the jacket's tailoring. Anna thought that the team worked together the best. Christopher thought that Gunnar should win.
Team Rocky & Bullwinkle - Elena started to complain as she thought Dmitry took over. Anna gave the team an insane eye as she realized their teamwork was awful. Nina thought the dress was okay, but it was the same. The shawl looked like an old lady's. Elena's coat looked like a cheap mistake. Michael warned her that the coat looked amateur. Alicia's contributions were forgettable. Boris and Natasha threw each other under the bus.
Team Competent - Nina loved the jacket, but the top looked wrong on the second. Heidi hated all the pieces except for the white jacket. She thought the top looked funny. Michael and Heidi thought the crotch was weak. Michael thought the coat was a flop. Ven was called out for not being him in his design. They were also criticized for having the most money and looking cheap. Anna warned the three for not pushing each other hard enough.
After discussing, Heidi announced the winner was Sonjia. The bottom two were Fabio and Alicia. Weeks of being in the bottom, Alicia finally got the axe.
Next Week: Mondo arrives to explain a textile design which makes Christopher doubts his textile skills.
