Project Runway Season 10 Episode 6 Recap: Fix My Friend

Aug 23 2012 10:47 pm ET
The contestants took a little longer to get ready in the morning as Sonjia is worried that the girls are going down like flies. Dmitry was desperate for a win to prove his worth. The contestants arrived at Parsons where Heidi explained their challenge. They would have a new client, but it was their best friend that needed a makeover. We're reminded that Melissa was immune at another opportune moment.
Tim and Johnny Lavoy, L'oreal representative, explained how the clients need to look and feel their best. The clients were assigned randomly. The challenge was still a one day challenge, which was wrong. These clients want quality. Some of the people in need were sisters and others just friends. We initially focused on Sonjia and her client was concerned about her short, pear shaped body. Elena was assigned something with colors. Ven had a zaftig contestant that was hesitant about skirts. Ven was more concerned about not knowing how to design for a non-model shaped girl. Dmitry called his client plain. I wonder what Dmitry’s client was thinking as they watched this episode. Nathan had a singer as his client and she considered bare midriff. Fabio's client Ko-rely was worried about not being too girly. Gunnar's client was in tears because she was excited about the situation. Has anyone noticed how Gunnar draws? It's like a five-year-old holding a crayon. The contestants had their 30 minutes at Mood and Ven continued to emphasize how plus-sized his client was.
Nathan was worried about his R&B client who had a form fitting dress that was both classy and sexy. Each client had their consultations ranging from hair color changes with unnecessary advertising to adding volume. Ven continued to bitch about how others had thin models. Fabio called his insanely good looking boyfriend and that would have motivated me to work harder.
Tim went around for his consultations and Tim was nervous about Nathan's hooker client. He warned about the level of vulgarity. Christopher had cool separates which could work with different clothes. Elena's client didn't have enough torso for a high waist skirt. Gunnar's ombre started to look like a piñata for Tim. Fabio had a V on the top which concerned Tim. Sonjia wanted to make sure there was a shape without making the shape a sphere. He warned her about proportions. Tim talked to Ven and Ven was open about how fat, unfashionable, and old his model was. Ass. Tim tried his best to be positive about both her shape and her age. Alicia was the furthest from her comfort zone by picking pink. Dmitry's dress may have been too conservative.
Elena was openly opinionated to Gunnar as the clients arrived with their new hair. Fabio's client, with cool hair, was happy about her dress. Sonjia's dress may have been too safe. Alicia was worried as her model was concerned about the lace. Nathan was still concerned about making his client look like a ho. Gunnar's full figured women were still happy and proud which counterbalanced Ven's "black will make you look less fat" comments. Christopher and Gunnar were mortified as he continued to make comments about how she was too fat for accessories.
It was the day of the runway and Ven continued to call his model fat before they went back to the runway. Can he stop for one second? Even Elena was nice to her client/model. Tim gave the contestants extra time for hair and makeup (one extra hour!) as the designers really made sure their clients looked beautiful. Ven was worried about his client's dress. Her friend was offended that Ven called her fat the whole time. Christopher talked to one of the other designers (I assume Fabio) about how mean Ven was. Terri (Ven's client) was in tears as her friend gave him the evil eye. With time running out Alicia (who I forgot was there) was still worried.
Heidi welcomed the designers and the client's friends to the makeover challenge. Along with Michael Koors and Nina Garcia was guest judge Alice Temperley.
Nathan - His model looked a bit rounder than she should be and the puckering was insane. The zipper was also annoying. Why are all the designers insisting on the silver zippers?
Elena - Finally, she had something that wasn't an emphasized shoulder jacket. Her client was really excited and it helped with the fact that the dress was simplistic.
Melissa - Take the throw off and the dress would have been amazing. Either way, she was safe and made a safe black dress.
Gunnar - Kim had this amazing runway walk with how much fun she was having that I appreciated how much movement the skirt had.
Alicia - For this dress being made by Alicia, the dress worked well. The pink elements on the top give a nice touch to a pretty simplistic dress.
Christopher - The jacket was great but it was covered up. The dress had great flow as well. If his model emphasized the jacket, it may have been better.
Ven - I hated the zipper of the dress or the fact that she had such a huge bag. You could see all the lumps as well on her body.
Dmitry - The dress was quite simplistic and felt like it was lacking something. The zipper in the back didn't help.
Fabio - The dress worked better than expected, except for the fact that his model waddled so it didn't give the dress the justice it deserved.
Sonjia - Her model still looked pudgy even with the stomach cinching. I question the dress length.
Heidi called Melissa, Christopher, Alicia, and Elena. The four contestants were all safe. The judges continued with the high and low scores. Sonjia, Ven, and Nathan had the lowest scores, while Gunnar, Dmitry, and Fabio were in the top.
Dmitry - While he tried to argue that his client could sleep in her dress. Heidi liked the level of sexiness and edginess. The color worked great with the hair color. Michael loved the fabric choice.
Fabio - He wanted the balance of power and femininity. Nina was greatly pleased how the hair matched the attitude of the dress. She looked professional. Alice hated the belt.
Gunnar - He wanted movement to match spirit for his client. Heidi loved the modeling. Michael loved the flirty but adult nature. Nina also approved of the dress but suggested lowering the plunge of the dress.
Sonjia - The best part was that the client was positive about the dress. Heidi questioned the knot in the middle and then thought the skirt was too short. Alice pointed out that the knot should be centered.
Ven - Ven admitted to dealing with "real sized women" and his client admitted to hating Ven. Heidi called out how offensive Ven was being. The combination of the zipper, belt, and accessories wasn't strong. Michael also didn't like how blocked the dress was. Nina thought the skirt wasn't bad, but the top didn't match at all.
Nathan - After explaining the R&B star concept Heidi thought it looked cheap. Nina thought the possibilities were endless for a musician/performer. Everything didn't work. Michael called out how many mistakes Nathan made as all the problems piled on top of each other.
After deliberation Heidi announced that the winner of the challenge was Fabio. He also received immunity. Heidi warned that more than one contestant may be eliminated, but only Nathan was eliminated. Ven then was extremely defensive when he got back.
