Project Runway Season 10 Episode 5 Recap: It's My Way on the Runway

Aug 16 2012 10:48 pm ET
I may have been the only Buffi fan, likening her to a weirdly British speaking Lady Gaga type. She at least brought a positive spirit to the competition. Alas, her clothes were a bit tacky. Gunnar and the boys miss her as well, but realized the intensity of the competition. Melissa is the lone person in her apartment, so production moved her to the other women's room.
The contestants welcomed Heidi holding the dreaded button bag. Nina Garcia arrived announced this episode's challenge. The contestants would be creating a capsule collection inspired by Marie Claire @ Work. There will be two teams which Elena, Ven, and Raul dreaded. Nina noted that there would be a photoshoot as well. The winning photos will be in the @ Work magazine. With Sonjia winning last week (and happily immune), she picked first. Heidi randomly picked Nathan as the beginning of the other team. The rest picked in a schoolyard fashion. Heidi also announced that with the odd number of contestants, each teammate was responsible for one look to keep the numbers balanced.
Team Six - Sonjia, Elena, Melissa, Dmitry, Fabio, Gunnar
Team Five - Nathan, Ven, Christopher, Alicia, Raul
Tim announced that we would know the groups as "Team 6" and "Team 5" because there was no leader. There will be no time on the second day because they would have to go straight to the photoshoot. Sonjia decided that each designer should make two pieces (pants, skirts, tops) and everyone agreed. Raul got defensive as he hoped to scrape by. For Team 5, they decided to go with a colorful fall piece. Gunnar tried to make suggestions, but Christopher/Ven/Nathan took over and picked a purple/fuchsia/turquoise. Six struggled with everything because Raul wanted lace in the workplace. The Chris/Ven/Nathan train continued to micromanage Gunnar as the contestants headed to move.
The teams had a budget of $1000/$1200 ($200 per contestant). The six were a mess, whereas the five had their colors set up. Raul through a fit as Dmitry was lost and confused. With two minutes remaining, team five was calm and collected as six shuffled everywhere.
The teams started to sort and Elena realized that she was missing a bag from Mood. Remember once upon a time when a contestant had the ability to go back and check with Mood? Elena decided to go with a backup of Dmitry's jersey. Raul got defensive as Melissa and Elena tried to pick designs. Fabio smiled as Team Five silently worked. Nathan felt the pressure of Marie Claire as Elena resorted to cursing and deep sighs. At least Buffi wasn't around to absorb her anger. Team Five started to stare at Gunnar as Ven and Nathan micromanaged him. Raul tried to make ruffles as Elena and Sonjia tried to adjust the length. Elena started to buckle, which is funny because Gunnar is in the same boat and didn't react the same way (at least not in front of his fellow contestants).
Tim arrived for critiques as he arrived at Team Six. They explained their tactic, a combination of blues and black, and a bit of zipper. Tim liked some of the counterpoints of Raul. Elena felt like her look was bad; Tim tried to reassure her. He was happy that the group had some individualization. Team Five didn't have a lot of designs done so Tim had to look at sketches and fabric. He was troubled by the high amounts of silks. He then realized the colors were a bit too "circus" as Gunnar looked away. He was concerned about the lace looking matronly and matador.
As the sewing finished up, Gunnar decided to make a new Gunnar dress. He talked to himself as he rushed. Sonjia was worried about making her second piece because Raul still didn't create a second look. The contestants giggled as Elena called the men of Five the Silk Chiffon-ies because their perchance for fabric. Elena called out the navy blue color that Dmitry chose. Dmitry called her an emotional wreck.
The models arrived for fittings as Christopher wondered about belting. Ven questioned Gunnar's taste levels. Dmitry called Ven a "one way monkey" (or a one trick pony). Melissa had a beautiful front, but the back puckered everywhere. With time running out Nathan started to buckle under the stress. Fabio still didn't create bottoms. Raul's vest looked bad on Elena. As time ran out Sonjia and Elena grabbed all their accessories.
The contestants arrived at Go Studios for their photoshoot as Tom Heinz probably struggled with Elena's screams. The contestants would choose three photos and have three hours to work. Six were looking for modern hair and makeup. Elena immediately started to scream at everyone. Five seemed calmer as they tried their best to communicate what they wanted. Nathan tried to ignore Elena as they shot. Six contestants bickered as Elena refused to use props. Raul threw a fit to counterbalance Elena. Melissa tried to calm her down as Elena turned on her.
It was the day of the runway show and the contestants had their hair and makeup time. Since everyone was done sewing, we had a lot more time focused on the makeup room. Heidi welcomed the contestants back to the runway and along with Nina Garcia and Michael Koors was Marie Claire's Joanna Coles.
Team Five
Nathan - The top looked nice and the pants had a good flow to it, though the crotch looked a bit puffy.
Christopher - I'm happy that he put the belt inside, the skirt had some odd fraying to it that I wasn't sure was intentional. The simplistic jacket worked.
Gunnar - The bottom of the dress was okay, but her models boobs bounced and giggled everywhere. The back was also puckered.
Fabio - There was something odd about the styling, I hated the headband. The dress was at least interesting.
Ven - His clothes continue to look old, with the same exact architecture on the top. It's very Ven.
Team Six
Melissa - The front of her dress looked nice with the interesting neck collar. The back zipper was interesting. And it wasn’t black!
Elena/Alicia - I thought the jacket was strong and the pants didn't pucker in the wrong places
Raul/Sonjia - The skirt was basic but very useful. The top was okay
Elena/Alicia - The wool pant worked really well with Elena's jacket blouse. I still hate the shoulder poofs.
Dmitry - The piece has a cool checkerboard blocking, I'm not sure if it fits ___ zipper
Raul/Sonjia - I thought the draping looked odd to me, does someone want to have a poofy crotch? The vest needed a top of some sort.
Heidi announced that both teams had the same exact score. That meant that everyone could win or lose.
Team five began with their softer fabric and Heidi liked the concept. Nina liked how the group looked like a collection that is consistent. She appreciated the skirt from Christopher. Michael loved Fabio's dress, but hated the headpiece. Joanna commended how the clothes looked easy to wear. Nina hated Nathan's look because of the matronly skew. Heidi thought that it matched a 50/60 year-old. Heidi was very upset about the boobs arguing. Michael noted that it was unflattering. They asked who was the weakest and the contestants threw Gunnar under the bus.
Team six was next and they tried to explain that they worked on their strengths. Nina liked the modern, editorial touches. Nina loved the drama of Melissa's blue dress. She loved how wearable Alicia's pants were. Michael agreed, but mentioned that the ruffles were too busy. Joanna appreciated the commercial appeal; she loved the pencil skirt, but hated the ruffles. Heidi appreciated both Melissa and Dmitry. Heidi didn't appreciate Elena's jacket. Michael didn't think it was a team challenge at all. They asked who the weakest link was and most threw Raul's name out there, though Elena grabbed a few votes.
The judges discussed and Nina announced that Team Six won the photoshoot. The winner of the challenge winner was Melissa. The bottom two were Gunnar and Raul. Even with the second chance, Raul was eliminated again.
