Tonight's television features various forms of competition. The CW has a new singing/coaching contest called The Next, Fox has pre-season football, and ABC and Food Network travel through time with chefs. Here's what's on TV Thursday.

First up, after another episode of Oh Sit!, the CW continues its early premieres with the debut of The Next. On this singing competition, established artists travel the country to coach the contestants competing for a record contract. Tonight's city is Orlando and features visits from Gloria Estefan and Nelly. Catch the debut at 9pm.

Football makes its way back to national primetime television with Fox's coverage of preseason action between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Atlanta Falcons. The game begins at 8pm Eastern.

Finally, two cooking shows will premiere tonight. On ABC, four chefs (include season two Top Chef winner Ilan Hall) compete on Time Machine Chefs. On this show, the chefs are tasked with cooking fancy meals relevant to different historical periods, made with equipment from that era. The show debuts at 9pm. Then at 10pm, Extreme Chef returns for a second season on Food Network. Rather than looking into the past, the seven competing chefs have to cook for the post-apocalyptic future.
