Project Runway Season 10 Episode 4 Recap: Women on the Go

Aug 09 2012 10:47 pm ET
We left off on a slight cliffhanger with Andrea's empty bed. Buffi and Melissa were shocked while Christopher was still nervous about having to deal with Andrea in the work room. Kooan wasn't feeling well, his energy completely gone. The contestants arrived at Michael Koors' store and Michael and Tim greeted the contestants. Tim explained that Andrea left last night, leaving all the contestants confused. Michael explained how the "modern woman" was his client that looked for chic and relaxed clothes. The challenge was about the "Woman on the go" and the contestants had to create one versatile, comfortable look that matched their aesthetic. The contestants had $150 and one day.
The contestants had time to sketch, while Gunnar, Fabio, and Melissa gabbed about Andrea. Shouldn't you be sketching? Tim wandered around and explained that the designers should imagine a concept of what their woman was doing. The contestants headed to Mood and Buffi gravitated back to pink. Dmitry couldn't find fabric at all. Kooan continued to be distant as he wandered around. Sonjia was the last to finish with her indifference getting the best of her.
The contestants headed back and they all had a conference about Andrea. Christopher hoped that he wasn't the cause of pushing her to quit. The conversations took a halt as Kooan announced to the group that he wanted to quit. Christopher explained how much Kooan was a special designer. Nathan was in tears because he was considering quitting and understands Kooan's position. Tim walked in and gathered the group. Almost immediately as he started talking about Andrea, Kooan told Tim that he was quitting. It's a shame because Kooan is a creative soul, but these challenges didn't really fit his aesthetic at all.
After Kooan left, the remaining contestants were in tears. Tim reentered the work room and reminded the contestants to keep strong. To keep the balance of numbers for eliminations, Raul (and his weird choice of hair) was back for another shot. While the contestants would have the rest of the day, Raul would have some extra time to compensate.
Tim arrived for his critiques and Dmitry wanted to drape; he explained that there was a "single seam" technique. Tim was pleasantly surprised. Sonjia had some feedback about her skirt bottom. Fabio's print was positive; his "leisure day" design was warned that she'd look like a hooker. Tim warned him about his jacket proportions. Tim headed to Buffi and was worried about the tulip skirt on the cool pink top. Christopher's outfit looked "dressy" and needed to have a bit of edge. Tim talked to Christopher about the challenge stress and he reiterated that he wanted to be on the show and compete. We then caught up with Raul. He wanted to do some sort of suit. Ven voiced-over was that Raul was useless. Ouch. I didn't think that Ven was that catty of a contestant, but Ven must really hate Raul.
The models arrived for a fitting and Raul must have gotten Kooan's model because he had to introduce himself to her. Fabio had a short dress and his model was worried about getting a lining in. Sonjia wanted to emphasize the versatility considering that her look was similar to Dmitry. Melissa was worried about getting four pieces done, but at least there was some brown in her clothes. Christopher had a moment where he got to talk to Buffi. She tried to focus as time was running out.
It's the day of the runway and Buffi continued to be insecure about her look; she hoped that aesthetic was enough to keep her around for another round. Ven continued to hate on Raul during his interviews. The contestants returned to Parsons and Melissa was worried about finishing. Christopher decided to ask Buffi if she wanted his black chiffon fabric instead of her pink. Buffi walked out and was upset that it wasn't her design aesthetic. Christopher was worried because he was only giving constructive criticism.
Tim arrived and gave the normal speech about hair, makeup and models. Elena had one pant leg that was too long. Fabio's dress was still too short. Raul's spirit dropped as his model was off four inches on her pants. I guess it would be unfair to give him his original model. At hair, I heard a lot of people using the words "bun" and hope that designers have more concepts about everyday women other than buns. Buffi was stressed because the chiffon and jersey was not what she normally designs like. Raul ended up adding triangle panels on his pants to finish the design. Buffi managed to finish, so at least her model's not naked. Right before they left for the runway, Raul plopped random accessories on her model. It probably would have been better without accessories.
Heidi welcomed the designers to the runway in a leopard dress. She re-welcomed Raul to the competition and reiterated how important the competition should be. Along with Michael Koors and Nina Garcia were Hayden Panettiere and Rachel Roy.
Sonjia - The simplicity of the dress worked well and appreciated the little side bunch matching the back.
Alicia - Surprisingly feminine, it's not the most original but it's clean.
Melissa - The multiple layers made it really interesting. It was a bit winter, especially with Buffi right afterward.
Buffi - The color wasn't as bad as expected but I didn't understand how the sides of the tulip pinched at the belt.
Fabio - While the dress should have been longer, it wasn't showing cheek. The pattern was wonderful.
Gunnar - He changed his original sketch which worked out decently; the breast panel confused me.
Nathan - The design didn't look as bad, but what was up with his model looking like an old woman?
Dmitry - The crosshatched design was a great touch, but there should have been more visual contrast.
Ven - The zipper design was cool, although puckered. Can he stop doing the pleating?
Raul - The outfit looked awful, what was with all the horrid triangles everywhere? The back pockets of the pants weren't even balanced.
Elena - It was smart to keep the jacket open, but the big shoulders were annoying.
Christopher - The dress was cool and had a nice cinch, I hope that the jacket was even because it was off-center as his model walked.
Heidi called out Gunnar, Ven, Nathan, Alicia, Melissa, and Elena. They were all in the middle and dismissed.
Sonjia - High - Heidi loved the dress and appreciated the fabric manipulation. Michael appreciated that the dress was in grey. Nina appreciated the conservative/sexy combination.
Fabio - Low - Fabio explained the "day off" story. Michael was disappointed that Fabio's personal presentation doesn't match his woman. Heidi wished the jacket should have been longer to match the proportion. Nina thought it lacked glamour.
Christopher - High - Heidi loved the dress and loved the jacket. Hayden appreciated how great the look was with the budget. Nina used the word "polished" among other words of appreciation.
Buffi - Low - Buffi tried to explain that this was her aesthetic and her belt would have been how the top could be manipulated. Hayden wanted something to narrow the shoulders. Heidi thought it looked too cheap. Rachel warned her about the belt and she needed to edit. Her hem was awful as well. Nina pointed out a lack of technical skills.
Raul - Low - His interpretation of the "suit" failed. Michael hated the design. The jacket was confusing. Heidi was scared of the triangles. Hayden thought the scrunching of the crotch was scary. Rachel thought the design was too overdone.
Dmitry - High - Michael thought the design was well made, but it should have been a stronger color to match. Rachel appreciated that Dmitry did the assignment with flying colors.
The judges deliberated and the winning design was Sonjia. Hayden asked to wear the design for a "Hollywood event." The bottom two ended up being Fabio and Buffi. Buffi was eliminated and was in tears in front of the designers. Melissa must be nervous as she's now the only one living in her apartment.
Next Week: Nina and a two team challenge. Sonjia just got really lucky for winning this week's immunity.
