Project Runway Season 10 Episode 3 Recap: Welcome Back (or not) to the Runway

Aug 03 2012 12:24 am ET

We may have lost Lantie already, but it's not like she peaked and sank. She had two designs that were below the bar so she deserved to be eliminated. It didn't seem like the remaining contestants cared about her elimination either. When they met with Heidi at the runway, she reminded us that Ven was safe and the contestants had to create a red carpet design.

The contestants headed over to South Street Seaport for the Lexus challenge. Tim explained that the contestants had to create an Emmy look. Part of the twist was that the color of the Lexus car had to be included in the design. Lexus' Brian Bolain mumbled some random advertising. Another twist was that it was a paired challenge and the teams had a $300 budget. Tim handed randomly assigned keys as the contestants pressed their car buttons to pair up. Most of the pairings looked like they would work well together with the exception of Gunnar who seems like he'd never be happy for anything. It would have been amazing if the producers could have rigged Christopher with Gunnar. They would either kill each other or have really good sex. The contestants were shipped over to their clients as they realized that they would be designing for previous contestants. All women.

Anya - Christopher & Andrea
Valerie - Sonjia & Nathan
Laura - Elena & Buffi
Kenley - Ven & Fabio
Irina - Kooan & Gunnar
April - Melissa & Dmitry
Mila - Alicia & Raul

Melissa and April could have designed black for days. Kenley tried to explain that she was fashion forward, young and cool. When someone has to describe themselves as "hip" and "cool" then they are not hip and cool. Anya claimed to be uncomfortable about her stomach. I have to assume when she was Miss Trinidad & Tobago, she would had worn bikinis and hated it. Laura reminds us that she loved sparkles; nice to see her aesthetic was still intact. The two menswear designers were a bit more worried as they were convinced that they needed to make a dress. Why? I got a glimpse of Christopher's sketch and realized he drew Anya's head amazingly.

The contestants headed to Mood as Gunnar dragged Kooan around. Ven headed straight for the tulle as per Kenley. It seemed like Buffi and Elena were working well together, but things would fall apart quickly. Alicia and Raul decided that a print would be amazing. A red print. On a red carpet. They wanted to make Mila blend in with the carpet. With time running out Melissa & Dmitry couldn't find a good silver fabric so they turned to charmeuse. Back at the work room, the designers talked a bit of smack about Irina and Kenley being harder to please. At least Irina never changed. Gunnar was also upset with being paired with a Kooan being a loose cannon.

There were general consensuses with the designs as Ven realized that they had to create their personal designs, with Kenley's frilly aesthetic. Granted, Kenley would be happy with a collared top and a circle skirt. Christopher reminded us that she wanted something structured to counterbalance her beachwear spirit. Buffi loved the drama that Laura was emphasizing and seemed to be safe for the day. Tim reminded us that the challenge was only one day and the winner (singular) would go to the Emmys with their designer.

Andrea was nervous about losing control and Christopher tried his best to learn more about her aesthetic. Christopher tried to be positive in the beginning. He never resorted to turning into Gunnar. Kooan had to trust Gunnar who continued to remove tape off the dress form. Elena worked on structure as Buffi created pleats. It seemed like there was more stress with Alicia and Raul because they never made eveningwear.

Elena turned to Buffi as she tried to rush the pleating. Ven started to get upset with Fabio because he was moving too slowly. Dmitry and Melissa struggled with silk charmeuse as they struggled. There was a montage of stress as Elena wanted to pull out her hair. Or change them for every confessional interview. Andrea took too long to take everything in.

The clients arrived as Tim went with their clients. Irina gave a weird look at Gunnar as if she was staring at a poop. April looked at Dmitry and Melissa's fabric and realized that the silver matched her purple-ish hair. Mila stared at her print and was immediately concerned about prints looking too day. Tim thought the top was nice, but not Emmys. Raul tried to fight for the fabric, but since there was a decent amount of black he shut up. As loud as she is, Kenley didn't veer towards Irina-bitch territory as she loved the colors and design. Maybe she wanted to look nice in front of Tim. Valerie loved the pop and didn't mind adding cleavage. Anya was confused that she was showing too much skin so Andrea suggested covering the top with a sheer panel. Christopher got confused and started to overthink everything. As Laura arrived with Tim, she knew that the design was too complicated. Laura suggested thinking of an alternate idea than pleating as Buffi nervously tried to calm down Elena. Elena started storming around as Buffi threatened to walk out. Walking out is so next week. Elena must have gone to the roof for a smoke because Buffi couldn’t find her.

Elena continued to complain that she wanted days to design. Elena started to sew with a chainsaw as she tried to bring fabric together. Christopher described her as a crazy wolf woman. Elena emphasized the survival aspect of living in Ukraine. Apparently it was struggle for food or become the best gymnast ever. Even though she was starving, Buffi tried her best to keep her head down. Andrea on the other hand, was working well with Christopher in her head but was too slow for their own good. The designers arrived for fit as Kenley seemed to have a nice dress that Sonjia described as "Church." So true. Alicia & Raul accepted their destiny with their black dress. With only a few minutes left Andrea still wasn't done.

The day of the runway show, the same two prep-hours applied and the clients would be the models. Andrea was worried about using one machine. The previous designers arrived as Irina emphasized how her dress looked awful and Andrea was still sewing. Though the hair and the makeup looked fine, Irina started going crazy as her bottom looked puckered. It reminded me how much I loved Althea.

Heidi welcomed the contestants to the runway and along with Michael Koors and Nina Garcia was guest judge Krysten Ritter. Krysten brought nothing to the table. Ven was still immune though he didn't need it this week.

Laura - Buffi & Elena created a dress that was nice enough. I liked how you could see the pink but it still had a maturity to it. Laura was all about sparkles and fur, so it was disappointing to not see that. Laura was a funny walker.
Anya - The top looked awful as I watched the slit of the dress inch higher. The irony was that with her pageant background Anya tried her best to work the hot mess. Imagine if Anya was walking in Irina's dress, she would have modeled the hell out of it.
Kenley - It's classic Kenley with Ven's details. She's going to love the dress because it's a circle skirt.
April - There was something about the bunching at the stomach that threw me off. Was the knot in the back too tight?
Mila - The dress looked awful. It looked like one of those sewing patterns you buy at Jo-ann Fabrics. Mila looked depressed.
Irina - Why did the fabric look like paper towel? The scarf in the back helped with the ass puckering. Irina continued to show bitch face as she walked and if she tried to sell the dress, it may have actually looked better.
Valerie - There was a great shine and Valerie had a confidence that she oozed that helped the dress. There would be a great pop to counterbalance a red carpet.

Heidi called Nathan & Sonjia, Elena & Buffi, Dmitry & Melissa. They were all the middle designers. Elena was upset about being safe. After having beige Twizzlers fall off last week, survival is more important. Fabio & Ven and Gunnar & Kooan had the high scores while Christopher & Andrea and Alicia & Raul had the low scores. As they waited in the back it everyone was shocked as Gunnar was in the top. They all proceeded to pick on Andrea's lack of drive.

Ven & Fabio - Ven wanted to emphasize the luxury of the Lexus. If that were the case, Michael suggested length. Kenley loved how everyone listened to her. Nina loved the color and the shortness. Krysten wasn't the biggest fan. Michael knew that it wasn't the wow-dress, but it was polished.

Gunnar & Kooan - Gunnar tried to b/s his way into saying that white was great for the Emmys. Kooan explained that he listened to Gunnar as much as possible. Irina proceeded to throw the two under the bus about their poor sewing skills. Nina liked the collar (thanks Lord & Taylor); Michael thought the silhouette was right. He emphasized that they understood the client. Kooan was nice enough to admit that Gunnar should win.

Raul & Alicia - The two tried to emphasize the structure of menswear and then proceeded to say that it was okay. Mila complained about the fit. The judges wondered why the two didn't make a good suit. Heidi called it boring. She then hated the ponytail extension. Michael reminded her to play their strengths; and if you don't believe that, remember that Anya and Kenley (in All-Stars) stuck to their guns and made it to the finals.

Christopher & Andrea - Andrea tried to talk about minimal design aesthetic. Christopher was at a loss for words because he was mortified by the whole design. Heidi knew that the execution was awful from the buttons to the cut. Nina called it dated and then cliché. Michael hated the slit, and called it pageant. Christopher admitted that the chiffon was a nightmare for Andrea as she admitted to doing a great job. Andrea admitted that she would be satisfied being eliminated. There was a long awkward moment between the two contestants as they tried to save themselves.

After the judges discussed the top designs, the obvious winners were Ven & Fabio, but Ven was specifically targeted as the winner. He seemed so blasé about the whole thing. At least Kenley counterbalanced that with her loud personality. The bottom two ended up as both Raul & Alicia. Alicia was saved and Raul was eliminated. I guess we'll never know why he insisted on putting his hair in the middle of his forehead.

We ended up with a cliffhanger about Andrea disappearing and someone else threatening to quit.
