Project Runway Season 10 Episode 2 Recap: Candy Couture

Jul 26 2012 10:30 pm ET
After losing Beatrice, it wasn't much of a loss since her knits looked boring as hell. Even with 90 minutes it was pretty hard to distinguish designers outside of Christopher, Ven, and Kooan. The contestants woke from Atlas and Kooan was mumbling random incoherencies. Lantie was stunned that she was in the bottom and has to recover.
The contestants got changed and headed to Parsons where Heidi talked to the contestants. Christopher has immunity in a great moment. She sent the contestants to Tim in a "childish" area. Turns out that it was Dylan's Candy Bar and Dylan (Ralph Lauren's daughter) was there to explain the unconventional item challenge: candy. Or candy-related crap that Dylan thought would be great at her store. Tim announced that the contestants could make "anything." I'm shocked that no one thought of just making a sexy bikini to save them time and allow them to be cleaner. The candy place seemed less chocolate-y, but there were some gold chocolate coins. There was a budget basically of $500 after Dylan gave the contestants %50 discounts.
Chaos began as contestants ran for a little bit of everything. Most contestants were smart to not grab actual t-shirts instead of Andrea who insisted on t-shirts and button candy. It's as if she's never seen this show before. Melissa obviously went for the black. Ven was inspired by stained glass windows. Lantie wanted to make sure she had a "foundation," which made it seem like she wouldn't have muslin. Everyone went to the line to pay and all the prices seemed perfect that no one had to return things.
Nathan wanted to make a Chanel-inspired dress. Buffi began cross-hatching strips. Work started immediately with most of the designers creating outfits that matched their original aesthetics. Tim announced that there was until 1AM and immunity was in play. Christopher had the ability to go out of the box and was completely upset by Gunnar's bitch-eyes.
Alicia wanted to make another lesbian-esque overall. Sonjia had sharks and jellybeans creating a great aquatic look. Buffi took apart an umbrella in hopes of making a circle skirt. She slammed the umbrella with a hammer to get the fabric loose. Lantie was worried about elimination so she wanted to make an eye-catching bodice. Andrea was relaxed as she tried to sew through buttons; she explained that she wanted an apron. Tim did say "anything." Kooan wanted a sweater-dress monster and decided to weave Twizzlers. I guess he didn't realize that Jillian (Season 3) took forever to make her Twizzler dress.
Tim arrived for critiques and Nathan's dress started getting too heavy. Christopher changed his design into a skirt and Tim loved how ambitious the dress would be. Raul's dress looked like real fabric. Melissa mastered her licorice. Elena had a monochromatic dress and had to commit to her one color. Sonjia's dress looked like sea glass to Tim; he loved the sophistication. Ven wanted his stained glass design and Tim said nothing negative.
Gunnar's design had a checkered pattern and was worried about making his model look fat and heavy. Dmitry stopped as he waited for his model; Tim reprimanded him. Kooan had to start over and Tim calmed him down. Lantie was using laptop socks. Andrea's apron left Tim speechless. He bluntly told her he was underwhelmed and the apron looked like a craft piece.
Andrea started cutting up the dress and realized that she didn't have to listen to Tim's critiques. Elena was already over pina colada anything. Koonan's monster got more conceptual which helped prevent it from looking like either an orange Mike Wazowski or Muno from Yo Gabba Gabba!. Buffi was worried about the models arriving because she didn't have time and they magically showed up. Editors: 1, Buffi: 0. Christopher wasn't ready as his model awkwardly looked on. Dmitry got really lucky because he fit his model almost perfectly. All the designers got fit of their dresses down to as perfectly as possible so they could glue like crazy. Gunnar started going around and critiquing all the people's clothes in a "nice girl" fashion. Sonjia talks with her lips going crazy in interviews. Andrea regretted Tim's opinions and decided to go back to her original concept.
With two hours to go Lantie was still further behind and decided to start over with an umbrella dress. Kooan tried to fill empty spaces of muslin as possible. Buffi made a bird's nest with her extra time. The rest of the contestants looked at accessories. Everyone started getting glue burns as they glued. Elena started to glue when hot glue hit her finger and her upper thigh. Christopher brought up the obvious point of, "Who wears hoochie shorts to work?" Hookers.
It was the day of the runway and Elena was still in pain. Everyone arrived back at the office and all of Kooan's cotton candy fell shriveled. He had to fill all the empty spaces. Buffi's cotton candy bird's next looked like poop. Lantie was still confident about her chances of success. Tim arrived and gave the contestants the normal two hours of prep time. The models arrived, and several looked like they had fear in their eyes. Elena stressed out as she couldn't get her dress out of the dress form.
I found it interesting that the designers wanted really simplistic makeup (maybe one pop of color) with aggressive hair. That or L'Oreal was pressuring the designers into their fashion sensibilities. Andrea turned the back of her dress and a camel's hump popped out of the back of the dress.
Heidi welcomed the contestants and explained her love for unconventional challenges. Along with Michael Kors and Nina Garcia was Dylan Lauren.
Gunnar - There was an odd disconnect between the top and bottom and the dress would have succeeded without the dumb panel. It would have looked better if the beige went in one direction while the black went the other.
Sonjia - The watery effect of the dress was great but the panels seemed possibly too short or undone on the bottom of the skirt. Loved the hairpiece.
Melissa - Melissa's punk design succeeded. It's rocker and cool.
Nathan - The shape of the skirt was wonderful and the colors managed to work even with brown on the bottom.
Andrea - The apron was okay, there was a lot there that was worse but what the hell was the explosion in the ass?
Alicia - The jumper turned out less lesbian than I expected. It had a great tropical feel to it.
Elena - The candy started falling off and you could see all of the gaps between the spaces.
Fabio - The dress had a great color and shine, but it lacked any wow factor.
Dmitry - The fringe was great especially because it was the only movement we saw from any dresses (outside of candy falling off). The colors were also amazing.
Kooan - Even with the candy dropping, I liked the pattern. There were a few pieces that you could see muslin, but I'll forgive him.
Christopher - The pattern was great, even though the zipper in the back looked awful. Who didn't have black zippers?
Raul - There was something cool about the top, but the bottom looked like a last minute mistake. The back of the top was great.
Buffi - I loved how the top was where I'd forgive the fact that the bottom was umbrella.
Lantie - I didn't get the dress. It's a nice pattern, but doesn’t work for this challenge.
Ven - I wished Ven's stained glass design was less pastel, but it was beautiful.
Heidi announced the six for critiques: Gunnar, Elena, Ven, Sonjia, Lantie, Buffi
Buffi - She explained her Sex in the City inspiration and Heidi criticized the paper on the bottom. She thought it was over accessorized. Michael thought it was Toddlers and Tiaras. She lacked the fun that Buffi wanted. Nina thought it was a pink explosion.
Sonjia - Heidi loved the texture and shape of the dress, her only criticism was the hat. Dylan loved the color because of her bias. Michael loved how connected all the different elements were. Nina liked the almost-costume style which made her smile.
Lantie - She explained that she had to make a second dress. Michael pointed out the flaws of her second dress was exactly the same as her first. Nina claimed that it was dignified, but she should stop having problems and she's short on time.
Ven - He loved the stained glass window concept and Heidi loved his taste. The flattering style and refreshing color was great. Michael loved the humor and chic nature of the design.
Elena - She explained the lack of her color options. Heidi compared the dress to having noodles on paper. Michael called it Rigatoni Mad Max. She lacked any body dimensions. She looked too fat. Nina claimed that it lacked any spirit.
Gunnar - He claimed to like lines so he explained the checkerboard effect. Heidi appreciated the print. Dylan loved the accessorizing. Nina called it "cute."
The top designers were: Gunnar, Sonjia, and Ven. While it was close between Sonjia and Ven, Ven won the challenge.
The bottom designers were: Buffi, Lantie, and Elena. The bottom two were between Lantie and Buffi. Lantie was eliminated and gave Buffi another shot.
Next Week: It's a team challenge for previous contestants including Anya, Kenley, and Irina.
