Big Brother 14 Week 1 Episode 2 Recap: Coaches' Competition and Nominations

Jul 15 2012 09:34 pm ET
On Sunday's edition of Big Brother 14, the Coaches compete for the first time while a clear division forms in the house. A new power is up for grabs while others become Have Nots for the week. Two Houseguests are nominated and CBS goes nuts with hashtags.
Previously on Big Brother 14: 12 new contestants entered the house to say reprehensible things on the Live Feeds that don't make the CBS broadcast in the hopes of winning $500,000. To help in this pursuit, four coaches – Mike Boogie, Dan, Britney and Janelle – will also be in the house. After the coaches drafted their teams of three for the season, the first Head of Household competition was held. Team Britney won the challenge, and the coach selected Willie Hantz (of the Survivor Hantzes) as the first HoH of the season. Team Dan lost and he was tasked with making the first boot of the season. He chose to evict Jodi, thereby reducing the People of Color representation by 50%.
Despite this downside, no one seems terribly broken up by Jodi's departure. They will probably be more bothered by the new dubstep-remix of the Big Brother theme song. Ick. As for Team Dan, they share a group hug as Jodi's picture shifts to black-and-white. Kara and Danielle are fine with Dan's decision, since they get along great and they are both still in the game.
Later, Dan and Mike chat at the giant chess set outside the HoH room. Mike wants Dan as an ally, specifically asking if he wants to "Will it up." Why couldn't Dr. Will be here this season? CBS decided that "Will It Up" deserves its own hashtag, as the show is following American Idol in having a new hashtag every 30 seconds. That's not how Twitter works, folks. Meanwhile, Britney and Janelle are aware of what the boys are doing and decide to team up as well.
Willie exits the Diary Room and asks the house who wants to go on the HoH room tour. Along with all the aquariums and pagodas, there's also an In-Law Suite for the current HoH's coach. Also in the room is the standard viewscreen for spying on the house. Willie, Janelle and Britney put the spyscreen to good use when Ian decides to use his insomnia as a means to explore the house in a Gollum-like fashion. If Ian doesn't say "My Precioussss" after winning Power of Veto or the HoH key, I swear I will quit this show. For realsies this time.
The next day Willie, Janelle and Team Britney (Shane and JoJo) talk strategy in the HoH room. We learn the coaches will not be voting in evictions, so the numbers game isn't as complicated as it could be. With the coaches aligned, the house is split nicely in a way that gives Team Britelle an advantage. Willie decides to use this as an opportunity to come out as a Hantz. JoJo has the best reaction to this news, her only knowledge of Russell being that he is "some TV villain…I can deal with villains." Janelle brings her team in to confirm the Janelle/Britney alliance and everyone seems to be on-board.
Later, Willie pulls Frank aside to chat about some side deals. Frank says he hasn't really had any conversations with his coach Mike yet, so he's willing to listen. Willie would like to play with Frank, but wants a deal that he won't be in danger of being nominated next week. Frank doesn't say anything one way or the other, which doesn't assuage Willie's suspicion that Mike is gunning for him.
We then get treated to a segment about Ian creeping out the rest of the house. Wil notices Ian walks around on tip-toes in a sneaky fashion while the women notice he likes to hang out in the bathroom area when they are taking showers. The segment ends with Ian going the full Joey Jeremiah apropos of nothing. CBS offers another hashtag.
After Mike and Frank have a status check (where Frank feels confident he is safe this week), Julie summons the Houseguests to the Living Room. There is a new competition on the roster this season: The Coaches' Competition. The winner of the weekly competition will select one team member to have Immunity for the week. However, there will also be Have Nots as a result of the competition.
This week's contest is called the BIg Brother Derby (another hashtag). Two coaches will race around the track trying to grab the tail of their opponent. The winners of the first two races will compete in the final race. Mike and Britney go first. The track is a giant brown slip-and-slide with a couple slopes and logs you can either dive under or climb over. Britney, who is not too optimistic about any challenge, struggles on the slopes allowing Mike to catch her. Dan and Janelle face-off in the second heat. Dan decides he doesn't want to endanger one of his team members by granting safety to the other, so he throws the competition in an unconvincing matter. In the final, Janelle and Mike race one another. Janelle has her game face on, but slips on the slopes a few times. That's enough to give Mike the edge he needs to win the challenge.
As the winner, Mike gets to choose who has Immunity this week between Ian, Frank and Jenn. Since Ian has been putting everyone on edge with his creepiness, Mike chooses the superfan. All four coaches now have to select one person from their teams to be Have Nots for the week. Britney chooses Shane, Dan chooses Danielle, Janelle chooses Ashley, and Mike chooses Ian (safety comes at a price). After sampling some slop, the Have Nots check out their temporary bedroom. It's spiral themed, including beds that swirl down into the floor and are made of that metal used for platforms on playground equipment. Danielle is particularly unimpressed.
The rest of the episode features strategy talk about who Willie should put up. Originally he was going to put up Ian, but now that isn't an option. Britney and Janelle want to pit Mike and Dan against one another, so they suggest Frank and Kara. Meanwhile, Mike and Dan are chatting about who they would rather see eliminated from their own teams. Mike wouldn't mind losing Jenn over Frank, especially because Frank should be the target. Dan is concerned about Kara's standing in the house. Later, many HGs notice that Joe, the professional chef, uses a large amount of food when making dinner for the house. No one has told him that if you use up the seven-day food supply in four days, you don't have food for the last three days. Mike chats with Willie about the possibility of nominating Joe, who may also be the type to self-destruct the second he is put on the block. Willie seems receptive in a non-committal way.
Nomination time. As Willie deliberates and places keys in the box, we get speculation from the potential nominees. Kara is nervous, Joe is "FEELING STRONG WITH OUR ALLIANCE" (the sound techs must love Joe, oy), and Frank is feeling confident. Willie voices over that he is expecting some surprised Houseguests and Coaches. The ceremony begins with a reminder that Ian is Immune this week. JoJo and Shane – the other two Team Britney members – are safe. Will, Danielle, Ashley, Jenn and Joe are also safe. That means Frank and Kara are up for eviction.
Next time on Big Brother 14: The first Power of Veto competition and ceremony.
