Steven Tyler leaving American Idol

Fox announced Thursday that Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler will not be returning as a judge for the twelfth season of American Idol.

"After some long...hard...thoughts…I’ve decided it’s time for me to let go of my mistress American Idol before she boils my rabbit," said Tyler in the opening of the press release issued Thursday afternoon. He goes on to say that he and the rest of Aerosmith will be touring and promoting their album 'Music from Another Dimension' which is scheduled to drop in November.

Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez joined Randy Jackson on the American Idol judging panel at the start of season 10. Tyler's style involved flirting with the female contestants (often inappropriately) and spouting off random rhymes with the occasional bleeps from Fox Standards and Practices.

The fate of the rest of the panel and the shows format is still up in the air. Although Lopez has hinted at not returning, no announcement has been made. Jackson, the last original judge on the panel, has also not officially signed on for another season. American Idol is scheduled to return in January.
