United Kingdom's "Love Will Set You Free" by Engelbert Humperdinck will kick off the Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final on May 26. Will the song be able to overcome a challenging running order placement to boost the UK's scoreboard standing?

Country:United Kigdom
Title: "Love Will Set You Free"
Artist: Engelbert Humperdinck
Final: Position 1
Last year's entry/position: "I Can" - Blue (11th Place)

The United Kingdom was able to break its run of poorly performing entries last year by switching to an internal selection process. The country is hoping to improve upon its 11th place finish with "Love Will Set You Free" by Engelbert Humperdinck. Here's the song:

A simple melody with straightforward lyrics delivered beautifully by The Hump. It should be an easy march to the top of the scoreboard…except for the song's placement. At the running order selection ceremony, murmurs could be heard through the livestream when the United Kingdom drew the envelope for slot number 1. On the one hand, this is great news in terms of speculating how the juries may vote, as the murmurs seem to hint that the song has an enthusiastic following within the national delegations. On the other hand, going first in a 26-song field will require an incredibly strong performance to stand out from the crowd.

I am really curious to see how this track ranks in Eastern Europe, particularly the countries that will be participating in the second semi-final. The style of this song is similar to Portugal's entry, making me wonder if the track will have similar penetration problems. The advantage the UK has over Portugal is the choice of language (English will probably engage more Eastern Europeans than Portuguese), but the tempo and tone remains relatively flat throughout the song.

Although drawing the one-spot may be a huge obstacle for the UK, it could be an incredible opportunity as well. This performance has the potential to set the tone for the Final. Last year, Finland seemed like an opening act for Bosnia & Herzegovina, which may have helped the latter achieve its sixth place finish. Whatever happens, the UK should continue the upward trend that began last year.
