Eurovision Song Contest 2012 Entry: Greece - Eleftheria Eleftheriou - Aphrodisiac
Apr 27 2012 01:24 pm CET

"Aphrodisiac" by Eleftheria Eleftheriou is an example of Eurovision perfection from Greece. Though the song seems to be flying under the radar among fan groups, could this crowd-pleasing track be the winner in Baku, Azerbaijan?

Country: Greece
Title: "Aphrodisiac"
Artist: Eleftheria Eleftheriou
Semi-Final: First, Position 3
Last year's entry/position: "Watch My Dance" - Loucas Giorkas f./Stereo Mike (7th Place)

Why isn't everybody talking about "Aphrodisiac" by Eleftheria Eleftheriou? Everything about this entry is brilliant: catchy instrumentation, an infectious hook, and the forum in which this song was selected should make Greece a frontrunner in this year's Contest. On that last point: Greece held its selection final in a shopping mall. What better place to select an entrant for a contest about mass appeal than a venue where everything is designed to appeal to the masses? As for the first two points, take a listen:

The question isn't whether or not Greece will advance out of the first semi-final, but if it will win it outright. I still don't like last year's entry from Greece, but that song won its semi-final, beating out eventual Contest winner Azerbaijan. This song is much more crowd-pleasing, as shown in this video from last weekend's Eurovision in Concert.

Surprisingly, the pre-game measurements of fandom for the song do not show great promise for Greece. The betting odds as of this writing show Greece as 13th-favorite to win while the most recent tabulation of OGAE fangroup scores has the song tied for 11th place. Most of the support is going towards Sweden, which will be Greece's biggest competition in this year's Contest. There is also a lot of support going towards Russia (3rd with bookies, tied for 6th in OGAE), which I find baffling. Part of the reason I distrust both these metrics is because they seem to ignore the power of diaspora voting (Greece's biggest asset) and because they were so wrong about France last year.

The only major obstacle for this song may be the minor issue of Greece almost destroying the Eurozone due to economic collapse. There are jokes about countries inconveniencing others having an impact on votes (such as Iceland's volcano screwing up travel in 2010), but there is no clear indication if those concerns are real. The question with Greece is always whether or not the country could afford to host the Contest if it wins, but I would like to cross that bridge if and when we get there. This year could very well be that year.
