After three months of auditions, boot camp, judges' houses, and live competition, the Fox reality contest The X Factor crowned its first winner Thursday night.
Melanie Amaro, a 19-year-old student from Sunrise, Florida was named the winner by viewer votes. Her prize is a five million dollar recording contract with Sony as well as a Pepsi commercial that will air during the Super Bowl in February.
30-year-old blues rocker Josh Krajcik from Columbus, Ohio was the runner-up. The third finalist to compete this week, trash collector Chris Rene from Santa Cruz, California, was eliminated midway through Thursday's show.
Melanie Amaro was mentored by Simon Cowell, who stated after the announcement that he believed the show found a superstar. Melanie closed Thursday's finale with a performance of "Listen" by Beyoncé. She found herself overwhelmed with emotion throughout the performance. "God is good!" she said as host Steve Jones tried to get a verbal reaction after the final results.
