The X Factor UK Finale Part 1 Recap: Little Mix vs Marcus Collins vs Amelia Lily
Dec 10 2011 05:01 pm CET
The UK version of X Factor held the first part of its eighth-series finale Saturday with three acts competing for the title. Marcus Collins, Amelia Lily and girl group Little Mix sang duets with their respective mentors but one act was voted out before Sunday's finale.
Round One – Solo Round
Marcus Collins opened the solo performance round with his rendition of Outkast's "Hey Ya." The staging incorporates a plane, 1960's flight attendants and tarmac workers. Although the performance was high energy, the vocals were all over the place. However, the judges had nothing but congratulations for the contestant.
Little Mix, the first girl group to make it to the X Factor finals, entered the stage on motorcycles before going into a military march-inspired version of "You Got the Love." This was the group's most solid performance of the series and took advantage of the arena setting with the staging and pyrotechnics.
Amelia Lily closed the solo round with "Ain't No Other Man" by Christina Aguilera. Although the performance was fine vocally, I found there to be an emotional disconnect from Amelia. She sounded tired and hollow, though the dancers helped to keep the energy up.
Round Two – Mentor Duets
Marcus Collins and Gary Barlow sang "She's Always a Woman" by Billy Joel. Gary played piano on the piece, creating a lounge singer vibe that may not work in Marcus's favor. The harmonies were lovely, but this song doesn't quite lend itself to a duet.
LIttle Mix and Tulisa joined forces to sing an Alicia Keys mashup of "If I Ain't Got You" and "Empire State of Mind." Although Tulisa took the lead for most of the performance, Little Mix contributed energy and it felt like a five-person group rather than a quartet with a guest. Little Mix delivered tonight.
Amelia Lily and Kelly Rowland ended the performances with a duet of "River Deep, Mountain High" by Tina Turner. This was the most energetic performance of the evening and allowed Amelia, rather than her mentor, to be showcased .
Voting for the show opened ten minutes into Saturday's program. Voting lines temporarily froze during the last half hour of the program to reveal which act would be eliminated. Amelia Lily received the fewest votes and was eliminated from the competition.
Both Little Mix and Marcus Collins have avoided the Final Showdowns throughout the series. They will face off in the only Final Showdown that truly matters Sunday at 7:30pm GMT/2:30pm Eastern. Voting has reopened and will close for the series during Sunday's show.
