Project Runway Recap: Finale Part 1

It's finally finale time and we're down to two men and two women. The contestants have all won at least one challenge so we can argue that they all deserved to make it to where they are now. Heidi talked to the contestants for one final time and she could see smiles from all of them. Like normal seasons there is the twist of only three designers actually competing. The contestants were given $9000 and five weeks. Five weeks? That's some of the shortest time to produce looks. I remember when contestants had a full three months to stew and figure out what they wanted to do.
Tim arrived to tell the contestants that he'd be checking up on the contestants soon. The contestants packed up and were so shocked about how quick everything passed. There's a mix of emotions that mostly involved exhaustion. Kimberly needed to take the first few days off. Viktor took a subway back whereas it seemed like Joshua looked like he walked home as well.
Three weeks passed and Tim headed to White Plains, Maryland to see Kimberly. She was beyond excited and lacking sleep. She led Tim downstairs to her studio and she explained how she elevated the Brooklyn girl in her designs. She showed her examples of clothes like leather and sweatpants. Tim saw Kimberly in the collection, but he suggested adding more wow. Tim got to meet Kimberly's friends and family; the people that have kept her grounded. Kimberly knew that her mother was her true motivation. She managed to bring up a valid point: an African-American hasn't won the show. Off the top of my head I think that Mychael Knight bombed his final collection, Emilio was outclassed by Seth Aaron, and Korto's collection may have been too colorful compared to Leanne's uber-conceptual circle-things. But it's not like Kimberly is the only minority this season with Anya being mixed and Viktor being Mexican, so she can't fully play the minority card.
Maraval, Trinidad. Anya greeted Tim and they went on a boat. Anya explained the energy of the ocean being connected to her. Tim met two of Anya's brothers and they explained how they love seeing her talent beyond her beauty. She lost her brother, Pilar, when he was 18 and he was the motivation for her moving. Anya was inspired by Tobago, but she only had fabrics. Interestingly, Anya hasn't gotten any shapes and construction. This left Tim in utter silence. He gave her a reality check because Anya was in a rut. He suggested Anya had to work with muslin for the next few days. See, Anya could have used another two or three weeks to think about everything.
Tim was back in New York City to visit Viktor and was tired after five flights of stairs. Viktor was inspired by the urban coast. He previously went to Mexico to celebrate his brother's death anniversary and took photos there. His brother was the inspiration of the collection. Tim was blown away by a few pieces including jackets and layers. The fact that he spent money to produce his own fabrics was an interesting choice, kind of an evolution of the HP challenges. He thought that one dress was a flat way to end the collection. Viktor introduced David, Viktor's boyfriend, and the three reflected about the whole situation. He explained that he was the youngest of seven and winning would be an American dream.
Queens, NY. Joshua and his sister McKenzie met with Tim and she explained that he did a bit of everything. Joshua admitted to having track and field athletics, but left his athletic dreams for New York. Joshua admitted that he didn't have a quantity of his collection. The two went to Joshua's small apartment and he explained his motivations. He had vintage patterns and interesting choices of material. Tim was scared that some pieces were gimmicky and verging on the side of tacky. He ended up ditching several fabrics after Tim called them homely. Tim wanted to weep after seeing the outfits. The outfits lacked sex and it looked like he was trying too hard.
It's finally fashion week and the contestants gathered at the Hudson Hotel. Joshua was the first to arrive and was in tears seeing the New York City skyline. He missed his mother and took the breeze as a sign. Anya arrived next and things started to sink in for her. Kimberly arrived in smiles and shock. Finally Viktor arrived and everyone was excited to see each other. Tim arrived and popped the champagne in celebration. He allowed the contestants to have one nice night before the stress occurred.
Soon the night became day and they all arrived in their new studio. The contestants started to unravel their clothes and talk smack about each other's outfits. Most contestants said that it wouldn't be in their taste. Tim gathered the contestants around and announced that the contestants would be doing a three look challenge.
Tim started to look at collections with Viktor. His first jacket was so awesome that the contestant's jaws dropped. Joshua's collection matured a bit and suggested three looks, but Tim thought that there was no cohesion with the three looks he picked. Joshua was struck by Tim's brick. Kimberly's three looks were still in flux. Tim suggested that she needed to define the Brooklyn urbanite. Anya's looks were actually looks, but Tim was disappointed by the fact that Anya retreated to her defensive corner. It was her worst moment, but Tim suggested finishing everything perfectly. Joshua was nervous about Anya because she finally was showing nervousness. Anya admitted that everyone's thoughts about Anya finally hit her.
Anya took a moment and continued to fight. Joshua was worried about showing his prints. Kimberly didn't feel centered. Time was up and Anya was horribly nervous. The day of the runway show arrived and all four contestants were nervous. They arrived at the studio and were nervous. Anya was hoping that everything worked. Viktor was confused as to why all three other contestants weren't done. Tim told the contestants that they would have models for hair/makeup and they could still use the Piperlime wall.
The models arrived for fitting and Anya's zipper came off. With time running out, Anya switched a model's outfit to the swimsuit because it fit. Joshua wanted a pop of color in the shoes. Viktor had so much time that he got makeup done. While Anya was frantic, Kimberly switched her dress last minute. The contestants made last minute touches and Joshua hoped that everything came together. The four contestants talked about making it to the final as the water works started to occur.
Heidi welcomed the return of the contestants to the runway. Michael Kors and Nina Garcia were the only other judges, since they knew the evolution of the contestants.
Viktor
Look 1 - Really like the effect of the skirt, but it's a bit cheerleader because of how the pleats folded. I loved the print and it reminded me of Viktor's Inkblot idea.
Look 2 - I couldn't understand the mirrors with the sheer because it looked a bit like razorblades instead of mirrors. I appreciate Viktor’s two sided look to the pants because if the pants were fully print it would have been way to busy.
Look 3 - The skirt may be too sheer for me, but the jacket was a stunner. The two clearly didn't go together.
Anya
Look 1 - I like the fabric, but it's a bit too familiar.
Look 2 - The bathing suit was boring, possibly because a tanner girl should have had it on.
Look 3 - The gown looked a bit puckered at points and I couldn't get over the odd fold on the side. The gold to me really didn't cream tropical, it was almost too mustard than gold.
Kimberly
Look 1 - The casual look seemed really easy, but I guess it wasn't impressive on television. Do women really want to have see-through clothes where you could see their black bras? I mean, the casual shirt print was nice, but could have been better if it was thicker.
Look 2 - I hated the bottom skirt because of how badly poofed the butt was. I hated the top back and don't understand why women would want their back to be revealed in that way.
Look 3 - The look really didn't go with the other two, but it looked finished. I liked how the sexiness was in the back when the front was fully covered.
Joshua
Look 1 - Please explain the glasses, I don't get it. The jacket was nice and I wasn't as discouraged by the pink pants as I would be.
Look 2 - The little black dress was nice and I liked the zipper back.
Look 3 - The final look had a great flow and I understood the structured top, but I didn't really get the jumper part of the dress.
The four contestants stood in front of the judges for their evaluations. Anya began first and she explained that she wanted to show her Caribbean background. While Nina liked the first dress, Heidi only liked the first dress. Heidi thought the final dress didn't look finished enough and Michael thought it was tortured. The styling was horrible and Michael suggested youthen-ing the accessories. Nina suggested changing the shoes to flats; she needed to embrace her point of view. Kimberly was next and she explained her Brooklyn-inspired looks. Michael appreciated that Kimberly's clothes screamed Kimberly. He liked the color and sex appeal, but the accessories and the bags were too heavy. Nina agreed with the accessorizing. Heidi hated the pink skirt, because it looked like a cartoon. After Kimberly explained her ivory jacket, she immediately regretted not using it.
Viktor was next and he explained his family photos, turned into prints. The jacket and pants were great for Michael, but the accessories were a bit distracting. After taking off the jacket, the dress was still perfect. Heidi tried on the jacket and it worked really well on Heidi. Michael suggested making an easy black pant/top to go with the white jacket. Nina suggested to get rid of the leather skirt. He needed to edit a bit. Joshua finished and tried to explain his intriguing cuts. Heidi liked the modern looks of the outfits. The belt looked too inexpensive. Michael had a rollercoaster ride with the dresses. Michael hated the back of the final dress. Nina thought that the styling was the best of the contestants and warned him not to add too much.
Anya pretty much realized that it was down to her and Kimberly. The judges deliberated, knowing that the guys did well. Viktor and Joshua had problems with editing. The girls both choked. It would have been interesting if there was a two-for all, but that's not gonna happen. After a commercial break Joshua and Viktor were both easily in. The judges pointed out the flaws in Kimberly's styling and color palate. Anya's looks were missing something. In the end Kimberly made it, but in a not surprising twist Anya was in. Sadly it was spoiled by the After the Runway preview where Viktor mentioned that he wished one person would be eliminated. Joshua seemed the most upset about both girls surviving. Tim arrived and he was so happy everyone made it and told everyone to regroup.
Next Week: It’s the finale! Curses and stress after Tim gave some the most harsh critiques.
