Project Runway Recap: The Finale Challenge

You know the competition was on when we got the shortened opening sequence. Joshua finally understood Burt and the guys realized that Burt could be better than Kimberly. Joshua questioned Anya's abilities. Does she even know how to make a jacket? In the girl’s room, the girls celebrated Anya's win, but Anya knew she had to push herself more to make it to the finals.
The contestants met with Heidi and she explained that the contestants are doing the final challenge. The contestants headed over to Governor's Island via a ferry and met with Tim. He introduced two guests Leslie Koch and John Stern of Storm King and explained that the island would be the inspiration for their final challenge. Tim announced that the designers would have to create three looks that all have to demonstrate range, meaning not just three flowing dresses, Anya. They had an hour for inspiration and got to wander around on golf carts.
Kimberly found a sculpture called "new beginning" and decided to use that as a parallel to life. Joshua explained having a military brother so he headed towards some old cannons and noticed a stained glass church right next to it. Laura was interested by circular shapes and thought up of a dress that had small circles up top that got larger at the bottom. Viktor loved the silhouettes with the city in the background and decided to do a metropolitan style collection. Anya was inspired by the sculptures so she decided to make lines and shape that didn't have prints.
The contestants wandered mood and had a $300 budget. Kimberly had to make adjustments to her colors. Laura decided to get as much fabric as possible. With five minutes left, Anya got black, white, and rose red. Laura had to edit down to get to her budget limits.
Laura was happy to find a fabric that already has circles so she didn't have to spend hours cutting circles. Didn't she want a size gradient of circles? Laura decided to compromise for time. Kimberly was stuck with another fabric choice that didn't look right. This girl needs to stand under a light and study her fabrics before she leaves Mood. Tim arrived with the button bag. He announced that the last five eliminated contestants would help. Tim pulled the buttons:
Kimberly - Becky
Viktor - Oliver
Laura - Anthony Ryan
Anya - Bert
Joshua - Bryce
Anya admitted that Bert evolved and she was excited to work with him. Tim reminded the assistants that there were three looks and the contestants spent time for explaining their inspirations and techniques. Anya thought Laura was too direct with her circle concepts. Joshua wanted to do a painted design, which left Bryce confused about editing. Bryce thought that Laura was doing stained glass as well with the circles; he managed to get Joshua to edit out the stained glass.
Anya had some strong opinions with Bert and he managed to agree with her. Laura was trying to get the judges' ideas in their head. Oliver had a lot of doubt with Viktor, but it was because that Oliver didn't like color. He admitted to feeling like a slave. Joshua complained about Anya's lack of jackets and it hit Anya hard. She turned to Laura and they both wondered why Joshua was being so aggressive to a friend.
With time going past, Viktor is doing great with timing. Kimberly started making changes on the fly, poor Becky couldn't do anything about it. Anya made some origami shapes that confused Bert. Did Bert use the word Origami because of Anya's partial Asian-ness? Anthony Ryan talked to Oliver about Laura's color choices. Since they didn't like the colors, Laura decided to dye her charmeuse. This dye must be free, because I'm positive that Laura didn't have extra budget to buy a bottle of dye.
Tim arrived to total silence. He started with Laura and she explained her circle inspiration. Tim thought the stencil was a bit too novelty and there was too much of it. The shape would distract the silhouette. Kimberly explained her new beginning. Her A-symmetrical coat was questionable for Tim because the fabric choices didn't work together. He then called her silver outfit "Statue of Liberty," Kimberly defended that she would tighten the waistline. Viktor's outfits screamed Viktor so Tim left without drama. Joshua wanted to play with a soft/hard look. Tim liked the vest/skirt combination and appreciated some of Joshua's risks. Anya wanted to explain that how shapes change when you walk around so her dresses tried the same. Anya had two gowns and a pair of pants. Joshua was convinced that there should be at least one jacket in a collection.
The models arrived for fittings and there were smiles and giggles. Oliver managed to get a sentence through with the word "boobs." Kimberly has no fabric left for her pants and she had one model that had nothing to try on for her. For Anya and Bert, the shapes needed to be perfect to get the look exactly. Joshua complained about Anya some more.
Anya managed to get a fashion lesson from Bert about sleeves. Viktor didn't even know if Anya how to make a sleeve as Anya tried to undo her mistakes. Laura needed a break and was mentally confused with circles coming out from nowhere.
On the day of the fashion show, Kimberly wanted to scrap her pants in lieu of her skirt. She had a shopping list of things she needed to do. Anya was totally stressed because of the limits that she put herself on. Tim announced the normal two hours of hair and makeup. Last minute finishing happened for the model fittings. Viktor was happy about his outfits. Laura decided to create a skirt last minute to ditch her pants as well. Anya got suggestions about doing a cohesive look for all her models.
The contestants all talked smack about each other's pieces as there were minor touches left. The guys were convinced that both were shoe-ins for the final show. Kimberly's sleeve/shoulder meet looked bad. Laura's fitting was horribly poor, but she couldn't do anything about it. With only seconds left, Anya realized her last dress was on backwards. Heidi welcomed the contestants to the runway and along with Michael Kors and Nina Garcia was guest judge actress Zoe Saldana.
Joshua - The first look didn't look horrible from the distance; the buttons in the back were distracting to me. The second look's studded tank top didn't look great and the fitting was poor. I think both the vest/skirt and shirt would have worked perfectly by themselves. Joshua’s' third look looked a bit too much like the Statue of Liberty.
Kimberly - The first look didn't need the scarf at all, but I’m sure it covers bad sleeves. The second look's shirt bottom looks like a weird cancer lump. The final look puts all the bumps in the right places and the sparkles were attractive.
Laura - The first look wasn't horrible. I was afraid of the circles overpowering everything. The second look didn't look fitted enough and looked wrinkly. The final look started to bunch funny and pucker at points.
Anya - The flow of the first black dress was nice; I like the cut in the back to show some skin. Anya's second look had potential, but still had too much flow to really create difference. The final look looked like a bed sheet wrapped around a girl.
Viktor - As much as I thought there was too much going on with Viktor, he not only had models that made things look amazing, the finishing was the best. The second look had the nice edge, but I hated the loud zipper in the back. The final look was simplistic, but it had interesting cuts and pops at the right places.
The judges started their evaluations with Joshua and he explained the strength and softness. Michael thought there may have been too much diversity and pointed out that he still needed editing. Zoe hated the gown, but Heidi thought the fabric looked too cheap. Kimberly was next and she never said anything about "new beginnings." Zoe liked the silver dress and the technique of the scarf. Michael thought the coat was odd and called it disco Halloween. Heidi called the coat wearing model an exchange student from Holland. Kimberly started to give her goodbyes.
Laura was next and she explained the circles. Heidi pointed out how nervous Laura was during the runway and she immediately started tearing up. Heidi thought while the outfits were complicated, her gown was her favorite. Nina didn't like the jacket's fitting and the final look didn't match at all. Zoe called it a pillowcase. Anya explained the dynamic shapes to represent how clothes had angles. Nina thought the angles were very modern and looked concise. Heidi loved the simplistic, but fashion-forward black dress. Michael loved that he matched the women's hair and height with the right dresses. Zoe called the gown a condom.
Finally Viktor was up and he explained the skyline. Heidi was amazed by his sewing skills, but thought there wasn't any wow looks. Nina loved the hair and makeup, but he needed to turn up the volume. Zoe felt uncomfortable about the boning in the black dress. Michael thought that the clothes were commercial, which in this point was a bit realistic selling point. He just needed runway punch.
Each contestant pleaded their cases for each of their passions and why they should make the finale. They each chose two other contestants who they thought should make it to the finale:
Joshua - Viktor and Anya
Kimberly - Anya and Laura
Anya - Joshua and Viktor
Laura - Viktor and Anya
Viktor - Joshua and Anya
If we took the contestant's suggestions to heart, Anya was a lock. After the judges deliberated yep, Anya was obviously in. Frontrunner Viktor made it through, but was warned to add more punch to his collection. Joshua was in but warned about editing. He hugged Anya as a friend and made it seem like all his catty remarks were because of stress. Laura and Kimberly were the bottom two and Laura was out. Kimberly was in, but was shocked completely for being there.
Laura was upset that she didn't make it because she knew her point of view was great for women. She was grateful for her experiences. Tim gave the final four a big group hug.
Next Week: The contestants go home to work on their designs. They come back and Anya doesn't look like she's in a power position any more.
