Project Runway Recap: Image is Everything

Now that the only non-winner was eliminated, the competition actually begins. Each of the contestants has legitimate reasons for surviving. The guys continued to worry about what the next challenge, except for Joshua who was the only guy left in the men's green apartment. Anya was happy that all her friends were around, but she knew that the competition would turn aggressively.
Heidi arrived and only hinted that the next challenge emphasized that "Image is everything." The contestants met with Tim and Peter Butler the Garnier representative; he explained that musician icons could be fashion forward. Our product placement company worked with Rolling Stone to have a relative unknown group, the Sheepdogs on the cover of Rolling Stone. I should emphasize now that while the Sheepdogs were on the cover, that statement had nothing to do with the challenge this week. Instead, one winning look will be in an advertorial in Rolling Stone and Marie Claire. This had to be awkward for the other three. The designers would be working in two teams of four.
Team Untitled - Oliver, Viktor, Kimberly, Joshua
Team Harmony - Anya, Laura, Anthony Ryan, Bert
Anthony and Laura were upset because they have both been paired up with Bert to negative effects. The Sheepdogs emerged and performed, breaking Oliver's fragile frame. In some Q&A the group suggested classic rock images with hippie undertones. Sadly, none of the designers knew how to take those notes without being too literal. The musicians each made personal suggestions and the designers picked their band member as the music played. Tim warned that while cohesion wasn't exactly perfect, the band should come together at least vaguely. The designers sketched and received the men's measurements.
Sam - Anya / Kimberly
Leot - Laura / Viktor
Ryan - Anthony Ryan / Josh
Ewan - Bert / Oliver
The contestants had individual $300 budget. There wasn't any red denim, so Laura turned to dying a pair of denim pants instead. Anya was worried; something she's never has been during the previous challenges. Oliver couldn't find any colors that matched and he ran out of time. Even when he's not sewing, he's last minute. When the contestants checked out Anya was shocked with the horrible choices. Laura accidentally spent $450 worth of fabric, but Bert gave Laura the extra money. It's a little late for a Bert to have a redemption arc.
At Parsons, the contestants started drafting and cutting, but Oliver was worried about the mannequin size because of Ewan's large size. What's with Oliver's fear of natural sizes? Anya pointed out that it's a reality that you have to design for real life customers.
The teams were generally worried that they were individuals working in a team. We got an unnecessary shot of Joshua's jiggly bottom, paired with his smirks. By the end of the episode, I'm surprised how many contestants were wearing briefs. Viktor and Anya were worried about Oliver's design, both by his color choices and his previous experience with cliental. Peter met with the contestants to talk about hair with the individual musicians. After some generic Garnier advertisements and awkward men sitting around, we were back to the competition. Oliver was worried about image, but was confident that Ewan would like the designs.
The contestants woke up to the second day of challenges and the girls were confused about the tailoring of menswear. Bert didn't have enough fabric, so he wanted to be very precise with his pants. The contestants continued to sew, but when Bert dyed his outfit, the colors turned purple. Tim arrived with critiques starting with Team Harmony. Laura was first and her red needed to be darker; Leot was worried about the chest hair. Anya wanted to layer and panel her outfits and had positive feedback, but it was too early to tell. For Anthony Ryan, like a good designer working with a client, he let Ryan pick the fabric choices. Ewan looked awkwardly at the loud print and pinstripe pants that Bert displayed. There were feminine undertones with the purple.
Viktor started for Team Untitled where he suggested distressing his pants. Tim warned him that it would look cheap if he went too far. For Kimberly, the pattern wasn't right, but the orange fabric that was loaned by Anya looked better. How is everyone allowed to share money and fabric? Joshua was next and he considered that he designed a few things too gay. Oliver's swan pattern shirt was a bit odd, but Oliver wanted to design cool things for stick thin models. After admitting that Ewan was big Tim warned him that he should still get work done in time.
The designers were given two more hours before the fittings. Bert was trying to dye his clothes darker. Oliver is fat-phobic but lack of passion concerned the designers. The musicians showed up in a blink of an eye. There were several awkward shots of Anya and Laura on their knees in front of the musicians. Kimberly was worried about the style lines. For Oliver, his pants continued to bunch in the bottom.
Tim left and the panicked contestants had three hours to finish. Joshua and Anya somehow had time to eat; maybe Anya should have focused on her top. While they started to talk about Oliver, Oliver showed up. Don't you hate when you smack talk and someone shows up? They showed concern for him, but he scoffed at them. There were tons of details left unfinished as the last few minutes ticked away. In the apartments, the girls were worried that they ran out of time on day two. Kimberly hoped that Bert and Oliver did worse than she did.
On the day of the runway show, Kimberly was far behind, lacking any precision. Tim announced that in a Runway first, instead of walking, the musicians would perform on the runway. Team Harmony was first, followed by Untitled. Bert had to accept his colors were as dark as it could get. Joshua added fringe to his outfit after Viktor already had fringe on his outfit. Bert was happy about his tie dying citing a galaxy on the guy's ass; maybe Ewan's ass was out of this world. With 30 minutes left, Oliver was still sewing. He denied his time management issues, but instead praised his last minute wonders. Kimberly's outfit looked like a women's outfit. After the hair and makeup, which was a lot of "make them look normal" Anya crossed her fingers and hoped that at least Kimberly would worse.
Heidi walked out attempting her best rocker pose. After explaining the challenge, Heidi reminded us that there would be two performances. Along with Michael Kors and Nina Garcia was pop star Adam Lambert.
Team Harmony
Anthony Ryan - There was something cool about the "Rock Jesus" look but there was no inspiration.
Anya - She was worried how bad the outfit looked more than I was. Again, like most of the outfits this week the outfit looked generic and poorly made.
Laura - Leot looked pretty good, if anything somehow she managed to get purple to work without looking too feminine for me.
Bert - There was something really feminine about the hair choice. I thought the tie dying looked horrible in the back as if he had an accident and wiped it on his shirt. I wasn't as negative about the pants, but I would have appreciated if it was darker.
Team Untitled
Joshua - I was totally staring at Ryan's crotch because of the zipper, which I guess was the point. He could have ditched the vest, but I liked the overall execution.
Kimberly - The shirt collar looked like a Halloween outfit. Who makes a spider-web style collar? The buttons were a huge miss.
Viktor - The jacket looked fake (though the judges loved it, I'll blame the television). I think there needed to be more distressing around the knee. Realistically, distressing on the knee would have happened if someone tripped and scraped their pants, there would never be such minor distress unless someone tried to shank you.
Oliver - The overall look wasn't horrible, but there were a lot of issues with the finishing. It was the same boring Oliver we?e seen for weeks, which I?e grown to appreciate.
Heidi announced that Team Harmony was first for evaluations. The team overall lacked the swagger for Michael and Nina thought the outfits looked too literal. Laura's look was one of the favorites for Heidi and Adam, though she didn't like the fringe. Michael thought the tie-dye looked like blood splatter, while Nina thought the jacket looked too feminine. Bert's look was outside of Ewan. Nina loved the pigtails which looked like a Viking to her. Anya's look was Pocahontas. The look was literal and the pants had a rip in the back. Granted, Anya had to deal with a drummer who sat down. Models don't sit on the runway. Michael tore the whole outfit apart. Anthony Ryan's look was middle ground, a bit too polished, and a bit feminine.
For Team Untitled Oliver's western outfit, Ewan disliked the light pants. Heidi grilled Oliver on the color choices and thought the outfit looked too dad. There were too many feminine choices. His finishing was called out. Kimberly got called out for a bad shirt. Michael called it Brady Bunch, Nina called it pajamas, Adam thought Scooby Doo, and Heidi thought it was Tinkerbell's boyfriend. Viktor got praise for the great jacket, even though the shirt may have been distracting for the overall look. Joshua tried his best to emphasize how much he loved the zipper, to Adam's chagrin. Heidi agreed with the zipper and pants cut. The vest could have been removed. Nina warned him for going natural.
After judging, the winner of the challenge was Viktor. The bottom three was Anya (who was heavily reprimanded), Kimberly, and Oliver. Kimberly was saved and left clutching her blanket. Oliver's slow sewing finally got to him and was eliminated. He still needs to learn to design for real people. We ended the episode with Viktor's advertorial, which interestingly fit the band's look overall.
Next Week: A time based challenge. For Anya, it was a money-based problem. After seeing this episode, couldn't people loan money to her?
