Project Runway Recap: What Women Want
Sep 19 2011 09:40 am ET

The nine remaining Project Runway designers begin with male clients describing what their respective ladyfriends want in a designer outfit. Oliver is not a fan of women with curves or opinions, Anya is a rock star again, and Malin Ackerman guest judges.

We continue our season at Atlas Apartments. Bryce was the only person who hasn't won a challenge, team or otherwise. Joshua, on the other hand, woke up on the right side of the bed. The girls were getting a bit nervous as another woman bit the dust.

Heidi welcomed the contestants, dreaded button bag in hand. She announced that there was a client based challenge ahead. Everyday men walked in and scared the daylights out of the designers. Not only were they not women, but several were...fat. I have a feeling this challenge was placed to gauge next week's challenge. Anya was immune this week and had first pick. Immunities were the no longer in play.

Anya - Mike
Bryce - Jovan
Bert - Anthony
Viktor - George
Joshua - Josh
Anthony Ryan - Brian
Oliver - Jeff
Laura - Daryl
Kimberly - Rasheem (aka Dimples)

Oliver was full of gems this week, even though some of what he says could sound really mean; it comes off as almost endearing. For example, "Fat is fine, but not when I'm making clothes." Oh, Oliver. Somehow you still get me to like you as a contestant.

Tim announced the twist of the challenge: the contestants had to design a look for the men's girlfriend/wife. A huge sigh of relief exhaled through the room. Little do they know what next week holds for them. Tim noted that the men, we'll emphasize their straight-ness now, would have to describe what they think their loved one would want or even how they dress. Laura prayed for a hot gold-digger. Tim pointed out that the women's sizes were provided and they would be walking the runway.

The contestants had 30 minutes and two days. It turns out the two days was probably because the clients showed up way too much during the whole challenge. I don't think I've ever seen clients on screen so much. The men arrived and gave horrible descriptions. Viktor asked an interesting question to gauge his client: what store does your lady shop at? It would have been amazing if he said Macys. That doesn't answer anything. The clients were of no help whatsoever – the ones that did have opinions wanted breasts galore. Joshua finally got a challenge: be simple. Bryce's client used the words "cutesy," "elegant," "girly," and "pink" in his description. Anthony Ryan had to recreate a lost dress that his client lost. Oliver tried his best to figure out what big breasts meant. Oliver's menswear aesthetic was being challenged this week.

At Mood, the contestants had $200, 30 minutes, and the clients were also there leaving negative comments. Anthony Ryan pulled out red, black, and white, which was the same exact color palate as last week. Oliver ran around in a panic confused. He asked Tim about breast size and Tim was the last person in the world to ask. Oliver tried the cashier and she said it was a cup size. Like supersized at McDonalds? He then claimed: "Those boobs to me are trouble."

Back at the work room, the contestants started working on style lines to help their clients see the direction of the outfit. Bryce wanted to make a "love" dress. Anthony wanted a mannequin with bigger, motor boating boobs. Oliver suggested a two tone outfit and was immediately rejected.

The women finally arrived and Laura was happy: Daryl got a great catch. Rebecca wanted to have a Barbie dress and suggested a fuchsia. Bert's client Ariana agreed with Bert's original designs. Anya got another silk challenge. Surprisingly Viktor designed something that matched perfectly with Victoria. Anthony Ryan's client Caitlyn remembered the lost dress. Joshua wanted to put metal plates on his dress and it was still aggressive. Oliver got rejected and had to try his best to keep his clients happy with the colors he chose. He directly suggested that the clients' thoughts were old-fashioned. Suzanne wasn't the easiest to work with. Bryce pulled a pink fabric and he decided to dye the fabric.

There was total silence for a few moments. Oliver complained to Anthony Ryan about how his client wanted bell sleeves and they both giggled. It's ironic because Anya decided to add a kimono bell sleeve to her dress. In the break room Bryce talked to the girls about how he missed his boyfriend. Why couldn't he get a Skype conversation?

The contestants arrived for day two of design. Bryce's hot pink outfit had tones of pepto bismol. The clients arrived again and wasted all of the time of the designers. Oliver's client complained about her crack. Inside he wanted to hit her over the head with a pan, but he tried to explain that since she didn't have a flat ass, it's going to gather a bit. I don't think he was coming off aggressively at all.

Tim arrived for his critiques. Tim thought Viktor's outfit was amazing and walked away with confidence. Anya's modified kimono sleeve was questionable and her finishing was also an issue. Bert's outfit had a bit of cleavage. Tim arrived for critique for Oliver. Tim was worried that the outfit looked like a crayon. Tim then directly called out Oliver's time management. Tim reminds Laura not to defend the shoe. For Kimberly, Tim was in silence. Anthony Ryan's dress looked old. For Joshua, he correctly edited himself perfectly. Tim then emphasized breast firmness. Tim loved Bryce's pink color, but he was second guessing too much.

The clients finally left again and Bryce was worried about the pink. He scrapped the silver/pink dress and only had a few hours to make a new dress. Oliver was scared that this challenge was his downfall.

On the day of the runway show, the contestants had the standard two hours of hair and makeup. There was a lot of quiet, last minute sewing before the clients arrived yet-again. Oliver's client was worried about it going up her butt. Oliver needed a "non-speaking person" to model. He emphasized that this is for the competition. Kimberly had some last minute finishing issues. Bryce's second dress still wasn't finished. While Oliver was fixing his outfit, Tim had to tell him that it was his time for hair and makeup. Tim announced unnecessary Piperlime sponsorships for the challenge. With time up, both Kimberly and Oliver were still last minute sewing, yet Bryce didn't decide to work on finishing his fit.

Heidi welcomed the contestants and the clients to the runway. Along with Michael Kors and Nina Garcia was Childrens Hospital actress Malin Ackerman.

Laura - I'm really happy that Laura decided to go with the teal instead of the fuchsia. There was a nice flow, but I didn't like the back.
Anthony Ryan - If you added a bow to the dress, she could have been Sailor Moon. The whole thing screamed Japanese schoolgirl. I hated the belt and the pattern underneath it wasn't any better.
Bert - Bert made yet another sleeper that was bunching at the crotch.
Joshua - I like the finishing and the minor sheer hints at the bottom of the skirt.
Bryce - Whoever chose the belt should be shot. The dress back looked like lederhosen with the straps.
Kimberly - Solid top and textured bottom? I could swear I saw Kimberly make this dress last week in different colors. The zipper in the back was too thick and noticeable.
Oliver - Her breasts didn't look ginormous as Oliver feared and the dress turned out better than I expected. The colors matched well.
Anya - With the extra time, the finishing looked amazing. There was this wonderful flow.
Viktor - The finishing of the whole outfit was amazing, though I could have done without the sunglasses. That was probably the best tailored dress this week.

Heidi called Kimberly, Oliver, and Laura. The three were middle-fodder. In the end we watched Oliver with trouble with boobies, sleeves, and butt crack and our payoff was that he was in the middle.

The high scorers were Anya (Memorable, Modern), Joshua (Great editing, great back), and Viktor (Fashion-y, Sheer top worked). The winner was Joshua. The bottom three were Bert (Too Simple, too short), Bryce (Huge pockets, too much happening), and Anthony Ryan (Old Cheerleader, no sex appeal). It was obvious, but Bryce was eliminated.

Next week on Project Runway: An actual menswear challenge, in teams. Why Adam Lambert is judging it is beyond me.
