Project Runway Recap: Off the Track

Another team challenge continues the emphasis on designer drama on this week's Project Runway. If you've haven't picked your alliance with Team Bert or Team Viktor, this episode may make your decision. Erin Wasson guest judges.
The contestants woke up to special packages...if Bert could see them in the dim light. The contestants were given some red product placement athletic gear. There was a note telling the contestants to meet Tim and Heidi at a track in Washington Heights. The girls all traded their clothes to make sure they were the most fashionable. Cecilia felt upset because she wasn't eliminated. That's the spirit Cecilia.
The contestants arrived at the track and field center making wild guesses about the challenge. Heidi greeted them and even before a challenge was announced, something smelled fishy. Tim announced that this week's challenge was to work in four teams of three and the four captains would be determined from a 200 meter race around the track. Cecilia already wanted to quit. She talked to Heidi and Tim and she said that she "hated" the competition. After some time, Cecilia realized that she would bow out. The real question was when she gave up on the show. She clearly was happy to be in the top in the stilt challenge, but lost all momentum when purple turned out to be grey.
The show couldn't just end and Heidi immediately started the 200 meter race. Joshua was in the lead with Danielle and Bryce behind him. Immediately after turning past the first curve, Oliver tripped and fell. To the amusement of the editors, they replayed the scene in slow motion. Way to destroy Oliver's spirit. The race ended with Joshua, Bryce, Anthony Ryan, and Viktor in the first four spots. Oliver would have been ahead of Viktor before his tumble. Bert was obviously last. The medical team took a look at Oliver and while his knee was busted, he passed out. After the commercial, Oliver claimed that he a panic attack. Each contestant picked their teams:
Joshua: Anya, Becky
Bryce: Kimberley, Danielle
Anthony Ryan: Laura, Bert
Viktor: Oliver
In a not so shocking twist, Heidi announced that Viktor and Oliver got to choose an eliminated designer not only to join them, but also fully return to the competition. While the other contestants whispered Josh C's name, Viktor caved and chose him. Of the contestants eliminated Fallene was a hair dresser and Julie's designs looked a bit tired. Josh C seemed like the obvious choice.
Heidi finally announced the challenge: design three looks that would go with Heidi's New Balance Sneaker design. She emphasized fashionable looks that weren't just workout clothes. Heidi also needed the contestants to use leather and/or suede (materials in her sneakers). The winners' design would be sold on Amazon. When she said Amazon, I realized this was the same exact challenge from Season 8.
There was a 30-minute sketching time and general caucusing. Becky suggested several designs that were shot down by both Josh and Anya. At least Anya understood that rejection could feel painful; she turns out being the good cop of the team. For Viktor and Oliver, Oliver wanted a casual/chic mixture. Oliver finally went for something aggressive and suggested a skirt. Josh C. had no say about color palate or direction. Bryce wanted to make a top that could turn upside-down. On team Anthony all of Bert's suggestions were rejected.
The contestants headed to Mood and were given a team budget of $300. Becky continued to be vetoed by Josh who continued to look like he smelled poo. Anthony picked a pretty fabric that Bert didn't appreciate. When time was up we got a wonderful nugget from Tim, "I'm such a nag." I wonder how he'd be like as a boyfriend.
The contestants arrived to find their leather and suede, meaning their $300 didn't have to cover it. Tim announced that the contestants would have only until 11pm, one hour less than the previous challenges. Danielle and Bryce were worried about being in the bottom for so many episodes; statistically, one of the two would be gone soon without Cecilia as a buffer zone. Josh C. returned to the delight of most of the contestants. His elimination motivated him to work harder.
Joshua and Anya were all BFFs and Becky was pushed to the back like a step-sister. Team Viktor struggled with Oliver's long skirt. Viktor called the long skirt/sneaker combination Amish. I'm saw more of a Catholic school nun/teacher. Anthony tried to get Bert to help out, but his sour attitude didn't help. Bert started to mumble on his high horse and forget names. Anya has never sewn jersey so Becky was given commands to sew. Seriously, what has Anya sewn?
Midway through the creation process, Heidi and Tim went to consultations. Bryce's suggestion of his Cowl/Hoodie was questioned for its lack of fashion forward spirit. Kimberly's dress looked boxy and wasn't a good sale. Luckily, Kimberly has immunity and she could have made a sheer sheet like Bert and let her walk out. Viktor's motorcycle jacket had positive feedback. Heidi put on Oliver's skirt and called it farm wear. Tim suggested editing.
Team Anthony explained the jacket and other looks. Heidi saw a combination of Grecian and jumpsuit; it didn't work well. Bert's got the impression that his whole collection was too sophisticated. Laura then explained that her model, Michel Ann, has a big booty to worry about. Heidi said nothing to help, possibly because she had no clue who the models were either. Over at Josh M's table, Heidi reamed Josh for having another side-panel dress. Anya's dress had positive reaction, granted, she hasn't done wrong since. Tim and Heidi were worried that Becky could have been thrown under the bus.
After realizing what crap the designers were making for her line, Heidi extended the work time to 4am, giving the designers an extra five hours to work. Josh M.'s team started to stress out and Josh immediately called Becky's clothes dowdy. Josh M then called her a baby; Anya tried her best to calm Becky down in her good cop motions. We get that wonderful edit of cameramen entering the women's bathroom and Becky trying to close the door on them. You should have closed the door and pretended to pee, Becky. We've seen crying in the bathroom before; this should be no different for Becky. Josh eventually came into the icky women's bathroom and told Becky that he was sorry. She was in tears because she assumed that since Josh thought that Becky's clothes were dowdy, every gay man and stylish woman in the work room thought her clothes were dowdy because they bicker together. They hugged it out in the bathroom.
The models arrived for their fittings and Oliver's dress looked great; it must have been a fluke. Bert continued to bicker; Anthony Ryan pointed out that Bert will be thrown under the bus because he didn't listen. With extra time Joshua needed a pop of color to give his outfits a modern touch. We fast forward from four hours to go to time being up and it really didn't seem like the outfits evolved at all. The contestants returned and Anthony Ryan claimed to have a fever. Kimberly thought she would remake a skirt with time running out. Bert and Josh M. started to bicker and hoped that each other would die. At hair and makeup all the teams wanted fresh and a little bit of body.
Heidi welcomed the contestants to the runway and along with Michael Kors and Nina Garcia was guest judge Erin Wasson.
Team Viktor
Viktor - I didn't understand the sneakers, but I really liked the jacket. I didn't like the off center skirt with the material he used because it looked more like a mistake.
Josh C. - For trying to up his game, Josh C. created an outfit that looked almost like what he wanted to do for Episode 1. It was a shirt and pants and while it worked well for sneakers, it didn't have pop.
Oliver - The styling seemed better to improve the long skirt. It still looked a bit silly.
Team Bryce
Bryce - His outfit looked like an extra-long shirt with the sleeves cut off and the waist pulled in a little bit. The buttons on the side were a nice touch though.
Kimberly - For having immunity, Kimberly created an outfit that really worked out. I'm happy that they ditched the weird pastel-like colors.
Danielle - Unfortunately, Danielle was the only one that had color so it seemed a bit out of place.
Team Anthony Ryan
Anthony Ryan - The outfit looked like a loose mess and it made his model look really fat in the midsection.
Laura - I liked Laura's look, but it looked really generic retail. Kind of like the clothes you find at Marshalls because no one wanted it.
Bert - I thought the top looked nice but the whole outfit didn't match the sneakers.
Team Joshua
Josh - The choice of pattern was nice and the airy jacket worked well.
Becky - Her look didn't look amazing, but the stripes felt like it may have been too much.
Anya - Anya created something that looked like an everyday shopping outfit if the skirt was wider. Keeping it tight left it a bit more fashionable.
Heidi announced that there were good and bad contestants. She announced that all the teams would have to talk to the judges because it was a mixed bag. Team Anthony Ryan started off with judging. Anthony Ryan admitted that he worked well with Laura but not Bert. Michael looked on in horror. Nina called out Anthony Ryan for creating pajamas; he created camel-toe (and camel-butt). Bert's outfit was presentable but didn't match the challenge. Joshua was called out for having bedazzled the outfit. Anya had the best outfit, but it was a bit too tailored. Josh had a nice top and Nina liked the jacket. The judges disliked Becky's outfit; Joshua admitted that he tried his best to suggest ideas. Becky admitted that she was the seamstress. As much as they were fighting, they were more synchronized than Anthony Ryan.
Viktor's team had positive response for the jacket. Oliver's dress looked too Biergarten. Erin Wasson liked the t-shirt with the holster-back, it helped that she wasn't around for other challenges. Nina liked the road warrior concept. Bryce's outfit looked great, but could work with heels. The other two looks were a hodgepodge. The blouse was a disappointment. They were called out for the knit lining. The color pop didn't fit with the rest of the outfit.
The judges deliberated and Michael pointed out how dramatic everyone was. After a lot of deliberation the judges seemed happy about the outcome. Heidi announced that Viktor and Josh both won the challenge; Viktor's outfit and Anya's maxi-dress would be sold on Amazon. Both teams were safe. The bottom two contestants were Danielle (repetitive clothes) and Anthony Ryan (poor leadership). Danielle was eliminated, but if Heidi had her choice she would have eliminated Anthony Ryan. In two weeks, Team Mousey Girls (Danielle, Cecilia, and Julie) were cut in a swoop.
Next Week on Project Runway: Little children (real ones, not the designers) cause chaos and drama. Michael Kors uses the word Teletubby.
